November 20, 200817 yr Which way do you point your horn? I thought it was to the left for a right handed person, but I just read a book that say's the opposite. So which way and why?
November 20, 200817 yr Although most right handers point their horn to the left mine points to the right. Why? Because it is my horn and my shop and that's the way I like it. Best regards, Tom
November 20, 200817 yr Ide assume its personal preference... My horn faces to the right. and im right handed..
November 20, 200817 yr There have been discussions on this before. As mentioned, there is no 'right' way, but various factors come into play, such as that most London-pattern anvils have a hardy hole at the heel, which can be a problem -- put your hardy cutter in the hole and the horn to the left and one false hammer-blow will rob you of your fingers... left, right, magnetic North, whatever works for you.
November 20, 200817 yr There has been a poll and thread on this subject some time back. Some interesting results and a good discussion in the archives....http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/anvil-horn-left-right-2538/
November 20, 200817 yr My main shop anvil has a hardy hole at either end so that is not a consideration. It's horn points right, the next anvil over's horn points straight towards me so I can use my favorite cross pein on it for certain tasks, the next anvil over's from that points away from me so I can use it's very thin heel easily. There is only one true way to do something blacksmithing and that's "Any Way That Works"!
November 20, 200817 yr I have found that it depends on what I am doing weather I want it to my left or right. So I move around it as needed. Tim
