November 12, 200817 yr (I used to get my hammer handles from Bolder Handles Products, Dolphinan, MO)....seems they are no longer available...anyone got a good source for premium No 1 handles of hickory??
November 12, 200817 yr I went yesterday to Central Hardwoods here in OKC and bought a 10'x10''x2'' piece of pecan / hickory to make my own. This is raw lumber but if I make 3 good handles from it it will have payed for it's self.

November 13, 200817 yr Oh Uri you villain! You make it all look so easy! I never realised that Hofi hammers come witha hand made Hofi handle as well. Another good reason for owning one I suppose. So is that how everybody would do it? Grind away with a belt sander?

November 13, 200817 yr I use a draw knife on occasion, as well as fiber discs in an angle grinder. Til I get a belt grinder I use my belt sander in the vise for final operations. For wood I usually find broke shovel handles about as fast as I need them. iswitched to shovel handles as th hammer handles I have bought did not have good grain. Long handles seem to be a better grade.
November 14, 200817 yr I will be making a draw knife for this purpose, so-far though I have cut rough to size with a saw, then used a band saw to get it a bit closer to the shape then grind away with a belt sander. If you just wanted round you could use a wood lathe t get real close to what you wanted but I am making some that are for axes and tomahawks and are going to have a bit of ''style'' (I hope)
November 15, 200817 yr Author Ordered a bunch of handles from Tennessee Hickory Products....will report on how they are when I get them. Got enough to last me for a while....I hope.
November 17, 200817 yr Before using the belt grinder to produce the hand hammer handles i forged ''small draw knives'' to do it . Attuched some pix of the drawknives i sded 15-20 years ago and some times i still use them hofi
