Ignis Forge Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I can't seem to find a good anvil; I did get a cast iron one but I found out it doesn't work so well. Is there still places that sell quality anvils? If so where can I find them? Quote
Frosty Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Welcome aboard Jack. Yes, there are a number of people making quality anvils in the USA. There are a number of new anvil imports as well. I don't have a list or I'd post it, someone will presently though. If you'll click on "User CP" and edit your profile to show your location you'll discover there's probably someone close by who can lend you a hand directly. Frosty Quote
matt87 Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Welcome, Jack! Don't forget that your anvil doesn't have to look like something Wile E. Coyote would suspend above a pile of roadrunner bait... there are plenty of ways of finding or making a serviceable anvil. Try looking through this forum and the gallery and 'lessons in blacksmithing' on this website to get you some ideas. Quote
Rob Browne Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Jack, Any substantial lump of iron can be an anvil, it doesn't have to be the London pattern to be an anvil. For many years I simply used a short length of railway iron and still use bits and pieces as my "real" anvil is only a small farriers type. Quote
David Einhorn Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) I suggest going to:[ABANA] The Suppliers Search Type the word Anvil in the search box and be prepared for a sizable list of anvil suppliers. If you go to enough blacksmith guild meetings and yearly conferences, anvils tend to show up for sale at these events also. Or find a relative that is into blacksmithing. I gave one of my nephews a beginners kit a few years ago that included, a 100lb anvil with a hardie, two pairs of tongs, the book "Edge of the Anvil", a sizable notebook full of information including how to build forges, and a one year membership in his local guild. No, I will not adopt any of you guys. Edited November 12, 2008 by UnicornForge Quote

yesteryearforge Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 The anvils that Jymm has are first rate I purchased one of each at the colonial rendezvous. They are plenty tough and H13 should be outstanding material for anvil material. Mike Tanner Quote

philip in china Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Are Hofi anvils available in USA yet? Quote
Jymm Hoffman Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 The Colonial weighs about 100 pounds. Thanks Mike. Quote
racer3j Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I don't know, here- if it is good enough for Mr Coyote, it is good enough for me.mtPS--two London pattern anvils, one USA Economy(Illinois Iron and Bolt-Vulcan) and one from near London, (Vaughan-Brooks).mt Quote
philip in china Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Re my earlier posting I have now found a Uri in a catalogue. Page 30 of the Angele catalogue shows all of Uri's range. I know it's probably not much use to those of you in USA but at 1180 Euros for the anvil and 365 for the stand it is well worth considering for anybody in Europe! Quote
