Getting back into knife making after about a year

Featured Replies

I have been getting some major progress in the blade making lately, First pic is what happens when you are impatient and have a slight warp that I should of left alone, second is a knife for my sister its what she wanted but i dont like the feel of it, Second is for another sister and I really like this one. last three pics is i am having a go at an explosion pattern and so far its worked out.

Ouch!

 Otherwise, looking good!

Not my slang but Oh SNAP! And it was such a pretty pattern. Who said, "we don't make mistakes we make shorter blades." ?

You make some beautiful patterns, I'm looking forward to the starburst  maybe etched farther or photographed under better light. I can't see the pattern very well but what I can see looks very nice.

All  of them are nice patterns but that explosion is just pretty darn cool

Well I have made the billet into a blade, It has been fairly successful but it was a close thing to failing. i was trying the thicken up the base of the handle for a intergrall bolster but I think I hadnt forged the tiles enough to bond together properly and I had a weld fail. So to reclaim the billet I forge welded another piece of materail onto it that was just a plain layered piece of stock and the outcome looks ok so I may not tell anyone that its not how it started out20250830_121844.thumb.jpg.689a65e8ddffdd6e7c34b6dadfa04f58.jpg20250830_153505.thumb.jpg.7cc848a3d1cbb140f4f43bb0865b15d4.jpg

Both patterns are striking, I LOVE low layer count high contrast. It's a beautiful knife though I'm not sure if I'd have put both patterns on the same blade. That's just a matter of taste, not a criticism.

Thanks Frosty, It wasnt supposed to be that way but I am happy with the save. Pity the weld failed as it could of been really cool to have the explosion or star burst in the bolster. I really like the lower layer counts as well.

I hear you but that's the way it goes sometimes.

I'd like to get away from compromising with what the material will allow.

I have made good progress with the blade, though it some faults I have proceded with it just because it has had so much time in making the stock it came from and I have learnt from this that I hope to not repeat but time will tell. It will have a hardwood (Jara) handle scales and brass pins
