Volume 17 of The Archaeology of York is dedicated to small finds, and within that volume, we find almost five hundred pages by the archaeologist Patrick Ottaway dedicated to the iron artifacts from Anglo-Scandinavian period (roughly the 9th and 10th centuries) excavated at the site located at 16-22 Coppergate, a street in the city center. JHCC, thanks that is pretty cool. One of my favorite periods. 

I just took a quick skim right now but i noticed a large section of "strips, bars, and scrap" that makes me figure that our smithing ancestors were as big of hoarders as we are today.

They also found a lot of needles it seems, they really did find the "needle in the hay stack" there.

I had to unsub from Time Team because it's contend has turned into archeologists talking about themselves instead of archeology. <sigh>

I'm still reading a bit at a time but sure wish the author actually had something to say other than, "It will be apparent from this discussion that . . . " 

What's apparent is the author hasn't examined any of the artefacts seeing as the entire article is more a comparisons of sketches on of a list of cites than anything. . . useful.

Years ago in my parish in NYC, one of the priests -- a renowned scholar who was on the faculties of Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University -- informed us one Sunday that we wouldn't be seeing much of him for the next year and a half, as he was committed to producing a major work on the history of the church and it was going to be taking up almost all his time. When I greeted him after the service, I observed that that gave a whole new meaning to "Publish or Parish"!

Ah HAH, I knew it rhymed but blanked and worse it was an easy one! <sigh>

Alliteration (same first letter), not rhyme (same ending sound). Just remember "alliteration's artful aid" and "rhyme time"!

I know I'm only 73 but I do know what a rhyme is.

I just blanked on tying, Frost, rime, rhyme (an old English spelling) and hoar, in a probably too complex ice forms pun for the forum. I don't know why I sent a broken pun but I did. Sorry about that, please disregard the above broken and now senseless statement.

As an aside , I've scanned to the locks and keys section of Anglo Scandinavian iron work and THIS is the sort of article a person can learn from! Instead of an endless catalogue and un descriptive "descriptions" of provenance this section describes artefacts and when possible identifies type and has sketches of said type with further sketches of key and lock showing how they worked together. 

I LOVE this sort of stuff!  and am no longer skimming through . . . stuff. I'm reading carefully and studying artefact and reproduction sketches and almost considering making a padlock or two.

Oh, and I'm well into chapter 5 of "The Count Of Monte Cristo." Good narrator and the story is starting to get interesting.

I'm feeling a little conflicted this morning Do I read Anglo Scan, listen to Count Of, or the Forum? Sadly the Forum doesn't take much time at all. <sigh> 

Keeping up with Doc's Whiteboard is easy but it's getting exciting so I keep going back to look at the series leading up to today's strip.
