April 29, 20251 yr I wonder if something like this could be a marketable item for people that sell things at hammer in's and festivals, etc.... The turner, not the spike knife.... I know I could scale it up to 150 lb anvil or more. Table top ones for little smithed items or floor models for big things. This ones going a bit fast.
April 29, 20251 yr I get the idea Scott but can't view it in Youtube. Youtube has decided I have to subscribe and pay to view videos. Last I checked they wanted $40/mo. my old password doesn't work and only links to a signup page. That was to watch my paid up Time team subscription but recently Utoob is carrying their videos so I'm cut off without paying the Toob. Sorry for the rant but this one really rankles. Frosty The Lucky.
May 1, 20251 yr Frosty, I can't understand why you would have to subscribe and pay. In general, YT videos are free for all to view. I just click on the white arrow in the center of the page and the video pops up just fine.
May 1, 20251 yr I wish. I can't cut and paste the message and there is no link to post but this is what it says. "! Sign in to confirm you're not a bot this helps protect our community. Learn more" Below that in the window are a series of "more youtube videos" thumbnail links. If I click on Learn more it opens a subscription page and price list. Those won't copy either. If I try to sign in it sends me to the same subscription page. I don't know what I did to cause youtube to do this but it does. Frosty The Lucky.
May 1, 20251 yr Jerry, one suggestion that may be of help is to clear any cookies associated with youtube. As you're probably aware, a cookie is a means for a website to deposit and store a little bit of information in your browser; a common use is to store preferences you may select or often some session information. Clearing a site's cookies from your browser will often log you out of that site. In the case of youtube, it may be that whatever action you'd taken to trigger this behavior is stored in cookies on your browser, so clearing them may get you back to the more typical experience which does not require logging in to view content. An alternative experiment is to test visiting youtube while in "private browsing" or "incognito" mode, an option your browser provides to minimize tracking and recording of history of your visit. If this works, that would further suggest that the cookies are the culprit. As a general practice, I'll occasionally get rid of all cookies just to clean house and get back to a tabula rasa. That does cause me to have to log back in to those sites requiring it. I'm not a Windows user anymore, so don't have any "click on the..." instructions to offer. --Larry
May 1, 20251 yr My browser clears cookies every time I shut it down, I've set my computer to do that for my last 3 computers. If I were to think probable causes I'd consider one of this machines surprise updates. Can't say no anymore and it updates whenever MS wants. Program files don't operate under the same rules and files as cookies so my auto delete cookies setting doesn't effect them at all. Frosty The Lucky.
May 1, 20251 yr Scott, yes - I think it would be quite marketable to that subset of customers! Especially if you slowed it down and pretty'd it up a bit I'm thinking people who sell items like sculptures, lamps, or other things that have features of interest on all sides.
May 1, 20251 yr I've figured out the youtube issue and will get with Deb (once I cool down) and straighten it out. Evidently I can only watch generic videos and old subscriptions loaded with ads on my computer. My "real" account is on my iphone so everything defaults to it. An account I didn't make, know about nor want but Deb does everything on hers so she set it up FOR me. Ask me first? I doubt it crossed her mind. Frosty The Lucky.
May 1, 20251 yr Author That video's really not that big of a deal, I just mounted a spike "knife" on a motor shaft that goes round. I was just looking for ideas. I hope you can figure it out. I am having trouble embeding a photo in a simple email...... 6 hours ago, Shainarue said: Especially if you slowed it down and pretty'd it up a bit For sure. I can set any speed. I have some ideas on hiding the motor as well. I can get some nice sandstone slabs if I can bore a hole in them. I also like the idea of a rotating sculpture..... . Lamps good too. Thanks.
May 1, 20251 yr It'll probably take a day or so to get myself straightened out with youtube, probably a lot longer catching up on videos I haven't seen. Drilling or cutting stone isn't hard if you know and follow the procedure. I'll LOVE helping you venture into a new media so to speak. Drilling holes in rocks or whatever else got in the way was my day job for a long time. Frosty The Lucky. (who's much less testy and surly now.)
May 6, 20251 yr Author Thank's Jerry. Your always there.... . Now how about a 3"×3"×1" square recess in a piece of quartzite?
May 6, 20251 yr Drill the corners to depth. Set a small skill saw's blade depth to your target depth and carefully cut lots of close strips at 90*. Carefully rig a low pressure air nozzle to keep the kerf clear and blade cool. Do all this outside and wear GOOD PPE. Rock dust, Silicious especially is NOT your lung's friend!! Once you've sawn enough out it's getting too hard to make another cut, carefully break the remainder out and use an end grinder with appropriate abrasive bits to smooth and polish it. I like locking the drill press at depth and moving the project piece back and forth under the bit. It's a LOT less tiring. Frosty The Lucky.
May 6, 20251 yr I always thought the Reuleaux triangle was a solution looking for a problem, but you may have found it. (The pair under the tape dispenser on my office table is a disappointing conversation starter. But I probably work in the wrong place.)
May 7, 20251 yr On re-reading my previous suggestion I remembered what to use to clean and polish the bottom of the recess. A 2nd hand shop router is cheap, designed for the job IF you take it easy. Frosty The Lucky.
