I'm starting to amass more of these tools than I can easily store.  Actually, that's a lie...I haven't even been attempting to store them, they're just laying (and rolling) around on my various workbenches and shelves, getting lost and interfering with my workflow.  Please weigh in on how you store your drifts and punches.  I saw that John at Black Bear Forge uses a large wooden cabinet with shallow drawers, and I guess that's an option, but I'm not looking for a cabinetry project at this stage.  I'm considering building something that hangs on the wall with two layers of 1" chicken wire at this stage.  Here's a side view of what I'm thinking, and it would be as wide as I need.  I could also add another layer above/below it, if the tilt is correct:

In our shop, I use 28oz tomato cans and 16 oz cans to separate the various punches, fullers, drifts, etc and these are all on a rolling cart (we're on concrete).  The cans are readily replaceable in my shop.

I drilled a bunch of holes in a piece of 4"x4" to hold the selection I'm using at a given time but in general they lay in cheap cake pans. I have a nice selection of cake pans, they go cheap or free at yard / garage,  etc. sales. They work better for me than my attempts with the holes in lumber method. It's actually easier to tell one from another in a single layer in a cake pan than standing business end up in the blocks.

There are other threads on this topic that I have posted this to, but I really like Essential Craftsman on YouTube’s storage. I am in the process of replicating it for my shop. You can see it in his shop tour videos as well as some other videos on making a fabricated gate.

Thanks for your replies, gang.  The Essential Craftman's rig is interesting, but I'm not sure I want to devote floor space to this, as my shop isn't very large.  Wall space is definitely less valuable at this stage.

I spent today thinking over several options in my mind and eventually executed on this method.  It's already full, but I can add another layer above, and can also obviously put more on either side as well.  I had a scrap piece of 4x4, so it ended up being free, which always makes my wife smile.  

 

That makes sense. I've got plenty of scrap 4x4s. Thanks for sharing Cleveland.
