  1. BMTU - I am still in my beginning stages... I am the idea guy.. it annoys the **** out of my friends. But I can not execute things for myself. I think I lack creativity. 8-) I think set yourself a small goal and go for it.. like I have 9 months to make Xmas gifts for the entire family (hooks, trivets, coat rack i.e. hooks on wood backer or metal backer, etc.) have you checked out Black Bear Forge you tube? (There are others) he has a playlist "Blacksmithing on a Budget" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_cK7UqQcYI&list=PLHta7NIJ9npbTNOR4JQW_IlDnCTxM2wV4&pp=iAQB In it he takes $500 buys some items and makes some items, and then sells those items to pay back his initial investment. You could set yourself a goal of producing some items to pay for your hobby. He has another playlist "Blacksmithing for Beginners" which might give you some more ideas of items to make. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi2vo75Zi_A&list=PLHta7NIJ9npYkM9Oh_2-6CBDjcej76F6s&pp=iAQB ARMY
  2. JHCC, thank you so much for these pictures and video. As I am a fledgling to this community, hobby, skillset, etc.... This was absolutely fascinating. Since my early twenties I have enjoyed historic endeavors. Be it a castle, a battle site, anything of historic relevance or something new I learn about and then find something to help put in perspective. For example I LOVE the show Gold Rush and not for the drama but for the skillset these folks are putting forth and how they overcome challenges in an industry I know nothing about. Tony Beets has 2 dredges, one working one hopefully soon to be working. Well not far from us there is a dredge set up as a historic site, left in place since the 50's I think. and to see it in person is 100000% different than reading or watching about it. POINT is.. this post just illustrates how much I don't know (which I know is alot) and now need to add to my bucket list sites like this to bring old world blacksmithing into focus. There is a couple of YouTube videos showing waterwheel smiths in action. so awesome to see. Not sure i am aloud to link them, but a quick search should bring them up if anyone is interested. ARMY
  3. Close up of the Forge. I took two more brick pieces and put them under the front doors.to keep them from falling. I forgot to change the front to work like the back.. tomorrow maybe. The piece on the left is the threaded end of 3/4 or 1" succor rod. My plan is to smash the threads flat. then upset the threaded end and turn it into a cut of tool for the hard tool The long piece is a Bale spear that broke I am not 100% sure what tool I am making yet. Right now I am evening up and upsetting the pointy end. ARMY
  4. yes, thanks frosty, I set it up that way in the rear. I can do the same in the front, thanks ARMY
  5. Thanks IronDragon, now that you say that, I do remember reading that in another thread.
  6. You can see the entire comment in the thread: https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/66519-what-did-you-do-in-the-shop-today/page/851/#comment-768975 The overhang area to the right I am thinking one day of doing an open air forging area. maybe put sides up... not sure. These two pictures are looking into my smithing / welding area Taken from the white door on the left in the picture above. At the far end is two more doors... and I have a fan blowing. This picture is taken just inside and left of the red door. Frosty, you brought up ventilation in the Mr Volcano Post. This building is an old Milk Barn separated from the house The work area is about 25' long but just shy of 9' wide You can see the Non-hardening clay on the anvil. I am trying to spend an hour or so practicing hammer control I started the Flat Jaw and Slot Jaw tongs from Kens Custom Iron. in this thread: https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/69563-new-delivery-yesterday-i-am-excited/ I rounder the handles using the amazon bought pair of tongs. But I found the stock a little hard to hold. So I drilled holes and put a bolt in so I could use the flat jab tongs while I finished up the slot jaw tongs. They turned out ok. I am new, I don't have all the skills i need. I get it.... One day I will go back and clean them up. BUT the slot jaw tongs hold that end piece of 1" Succor Rod My thought it to square the small end for the hardy hold. and turn the threaded end into a cut off end. I might need to just cut off the threads and start with that round part Not 100% sure yet. BUT BUT BUT... the Mr Volcano got that little guy I would yellow. And it was starting to move. 8-) ARMY
  7. Billy so true .. so true. Frosty .. I will do those tests this weekend. Mikey - it is the $88 Mr Volcano, the only upgrade was buying a 10 foot steel braded regulator. I am thinking I might coat the inside with ITC100HC - after I get a little more comfortable with her. Neil, here is my attempt at reconfiguring the way you suggested. I also moved the forge to the higher level on the stove because the bricks were a bit difficult being stacked. I changed the platform in front of the forge so now it is all the same level as the brick inside the forge. I think I might have to get one of those metal carts. I am not sure if this height will work for me or not. I will get a fired up picture tomorrow. ARMY
  8. I apologize i should have replied earlier, Mike, don't worry I have thick skin and I am posting to get criticized. Neil, I did not under stand what yo meant when i read it the first time, but just now I got it. I will change tonight and take a new picture. I think I still have enough bricks to do that. Frosty, you are right, I should have taken a more complete picture, it is like only reading half the sentence. After your comment I also realized, why did I have the PSI so low. The forge comes with a 20 PSI regulator, I upgraded to this braded steel regulator with PSI read out. SO last night I pumped it up to 12 PSI, holy cow, it got louder and much hotter in that little smithy area. I will lose 5lbs by the end of the week. 8-) Here is the flame when I started the forge. I am not sure if I had it at 12PSI or not when I took these. I let it run for 5 minutes. I closed the back, waited 5 more minutes before putting steel in the forge this is about 10-15 minutes after starting I tried to get the steel to show up in the picture but its a phone, and struggled to make out the shape. ARMY PS. Before I closed the back of the forge. or right after I closed it. I noticed the wall was very hot to the touch. Should I be concerned?
  9. Best Wishes and all the Prayers we can muster. /Salute ARMY
  10. beautiful, thanks for sharing Alexandr ARMY
  11. I put the steel in a little bit for the bottom picture... I will start waiting a bit longer tomorrow.
  12. Thomas, In that bottom picture, I saw the side was bright so i thought it was hot enough. Should i wait longer? until the whole forge is bright orange? or yellow even? ARMY
  13. I started the Mr. Volcano last weekend, this weekend was the second run on it. About 3 hours each Saturday and Sunday (12 hours). I was looking at several threads about tuning a gas forge. I am wondering how does these flames look? I am running at about 3-4 PSI. Flames at ignition. I close the back and front to about a 1" opening on each to warm up. And then after a few minutes the sides are orange. I leave the steel in the forge until it is bright orange, like the right side of the this last picture. I welcome your thoughts and feed back. ARMY
  14. Rojo Very nice Set of Hooks, your mounting plate and the rivets turn out very nice as well. Chad, nice drift, what project did you make it for? ARMY
  15. RIGHT!!! that could be a heck of a wrist rocket!! ARMY
