Memorial Day 2023

It is now well into Memorial Day weekend and I will post my annual appeal to remember that this is not just the first long weekend of the summer but to ask everyone to take time to remember the young men and women who never came home and had the chance to grow old like I and the other veterans did.  They never had the opportunity to see their sons and daughters grow up and become adults, or experience years together with their best friend and partner,  or even to learn blacksmithing and know the joy of creating something that did not exist until you put your mind and hand to it.

"They will not grow old, as we who are left grow old,

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,

We will rmember them."

"It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

and

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."

I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sails. ~ Semper Paratus

I did not directly serve, but spent the first 19 years of my life either following my father around the world, or hoping that he would come home from where he was serving protecting our freedom. I was lucky that he came home from the Korean Conflict and 2 tours in Viet Nam, but I witnessed several of my schoolmates removed during class, to never return and several of our neighbors to have an OD vehicle come to their house with two officers go to the door and see the family leave to return to their home town due to the sad news that they received. So yes, this is a very special, and sad day for me when I remember all of the soldiers that served, and didn’t come home, as well as the families for the ones that served waiting for their loved ones to return.
I do not have the words to express my total gratitude to all that served and to their families that support them
