Jeff L
Hey Everyone, Im learning a lot from this site, thank you. This is my 2nd anvil, bought it recently from an auction. It’s about 200lbs, I’m not sure what the inverted triangle with a large C means? Thats the only markings I can find, thanks for any help. FlatLiner
That is a Columbian anvil. It is a cast tool steel anvil. They are considered a top tier anvil. They are supposed to be the first cast all steel anvil in the US. They were only made for about 20 years.
Jeff L
Wow! Thank you for that info. she rings like a bell and seems to have a good return. im building a stand for her now.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Outstanding find Colombians are top of the line cast steel anvils made by the Colombian Hardware CO. Cleveland Ohio. Mind telling us how big of a hole it left in your wallet. Hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on it's hardened face, which does more harm than good. Jeff L
Iron dragon, Including the auction fees I paid $530, I’m not sure if I got a good deal or not? im guessing 200lbs, I don’t have a way to weigh it.
FlatLiner
Out here in the west that price is a steal.
JHCC
Excellent price. Nice score. 42 minutes ago, Jeff L said: im guessing 200lbs, I don’t have a way to weigh it. Ah, but you do! Put the anvil on one end of a long board with some kind of fulcrum roughly in the middle and an object of known weight (say, a 40 lb bag of dog food) at the other end. Move the fulcrum until the anvil and the object are balanced. Now take the distance from the object to the fulcrum, divide that by the distance from the fulcrum to the anvil, and multiply the resulting number by the weight of the object. Easy peasy. (Or just put it on a bathroom scale.)
FlatLiner
Or you just use the Columbian anvil measuremens to get the weight.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
At under $3.00 us per pound I would say ya done great on the price. Around here that anvil would bring at least $1000.00.
Jeff L
Wow! Great info! thanks to everyone! According to FlatLiner’s chart it 225 lbs! Finished a stand for it.
NoGoodWithUsernames
I almost had a small heart attack, I thought you welded the anvil straight to the base. I had to zoom in to see the brackets you made, very nicely done!
Jeff L
Ha ha, No I didn’t weld it. I also followed everyone’s advice and didn’t touch the face with anything other than a wire brush.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
That's a good looking stand. If the ring is ear splitting set the feet in some cheap calking compound. That will deaden the ring a lot.
Jeff L
I used a tube of silicone, the ring is pretty much gone yet still has a nice rebound. I also filled the square tubes with sand.
JHCC
Very nice indeed. Enjoy.
FlatLiner
Awsome score. I am still looking for a 200+ lb anvil for a screaming deal like that. I am in no hurry though, I have found that my 125 lb Sisco and 135 lb Columbian anvils do everything that I need. I just think it would be cool to have a 200+ lb Swedish or Columbian anvil.
