I Forge Iron

Who is the manufactor

Recommended Posts

I was recently gifted an anvil. Trying to figure out the age, manufacturer & value.
it does have a raised Z on one side and a raised M on the other. Both seem to be part of the casting process. Guessing it’s weight is about 75 pounds. It does have a square & round hole on the top. No mouse holes on the under sides. If anyone can help, greatly appreciated. Thanks Dan

Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If  you put your general location in the header you'll have a better chance of meeting up with members living within visiting distance. On the other hand if your only interest in the forum is IDing your anvil, don't sweat it.

We can't even make a guess from your description. Post a couple pics and we'll give it a try. If you light it from the side and shoot from a moderate distance say 12"+ details will be more clear. A pic of each side from slightly above so we can see the sides and face in one pic is good. A pic from each end angled up from below so we can see the underside of horn and heel and any numbers on the feet. One of the bottom so we can see what the base looks like.

That should let us evaluate and hopeful ID it for you.

Welcome from the Ozark mountains.

No handling holes does indicate a cast anvil. Now it could be a cast steel anvil which are generally good anvils or it could be cast iron which are junk and what we call an ASO (Anvil Shaped Object). If you tap it all over the face and it rings and has rebound, that is a good sign. There are some anvils that are cast iron bases with a hardened steel plate welded on that are good anvils and quieter than all cast steel anvils.
