im trying to build my first flip knife and trying to figure out all the mechanisms any advice would be appreciated 

Did you look in the folding knife section?  I will relocate this post there for you

If it your first folder, then I would suggest starting with a simple slip-joint.  Steve Culver has a great book on designing the mechanism for a slip-joint.  The book comes with a template you can use as well.

If you truly want a "Flipper", then you are probably looking for a liner lock design.  However, I can't offer any guidance on designing one of those.

 

Also check local knife laws.  I found out that a replica of a late 12 century knife was considered an illegal "gravity knife" where I once lived!

....that is such a broad question....imagine how much we have to write, explain, answer etc to nail that.....

...most of liner locks can be "flipped"...
