If you must wear a mask to protect your mouth, sew a button on your head cover to attach the ear pieces of the mask.  It will save the wear and tear on your ears from extended use.

Sandy has informed me that it is not acceptable to wear a plague doctors mask on my trips to the grocery store. The head straps are easier on ones ears.

*So* *Happy*  I'm not crossing the border twice a day!  Those folks out there with the fully automatic weapons get really fussy about mask wearing people heading their way carrying satchels! (Truth, it was a problem during very cold and very windy and very dusty crossings when a mask/googles would have been nice!)
