Huckaberry
Hello Everybody, I’m from Shreveport, Louisiana. After a conversation at work the other day about anvils, I decided to get Papaw’s old one out and try to figure out what it is. Growing up I can always remember this anvil being down at the barn. He passed away in 2010 and regretfully I never asked him about the history of it. After a little research I see that it’s a good quality Arm and Hammer 87#. The serial # is 25198. Can somebody tell me the year it was made? And any comments on condition would be appreciated. Thanks

We won't remember that once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it, also the guide line to posting large pictures. A good looking A&H, have you read about not grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face?
Black Frog
Very interesting weight stamp, the deeper markings are "81", and the lighter ones are "79'. A&H would often have their weight number spread out to each side of the logo, so 81 or 79 would be appropriate spacing.
ThomasPowers
Nothing a bathroom scale couldn't clear up. I've seen a number of miss stamped anvils over the years. I think my favorite was a CWT one where they messed up and had to use a center number greater than 3 to get the weight right...
Huckaberry
It weighs 84 lbs on a bathroom scale. That’s pretty close to 81. But looking at the numbers real close, the 8 and 9 look the same. Size and depth. The 1 is noticeably wider.
