February 4, 20197 yr You got steel toed boots? LOL Seriously, Looks like it will do the job for now. You might want to see if you can mount the rail vertically if you can grind one end smooth. More mass under the hammer will move steel easier for you.
February 4, 20197 yr For a stand, less pieces is usually better. If you had access to a tree stump segment, that would be better. Also; cut the burned ends of the rail off; and mount it vertically. You really don't need more surface than the size of your hammer; but you want it to be fixed as solid as possible. I got myself a rail too; then mounted it vertically to a block of wood; then welded 2 pieces of metal to each size of the rail (those welding plates they use to attach one rail to the other ), and ground the surface flat, welded hardfacing rod, ground again and so on ... used that for about 2 years until I had access to much better anvils. Seriously, the white boards will shatter and make the whole unstable after a while; and the long pieces sticking out on the sides cannot be used either.

February 4, 20197 yr Lose that stand, it stinks old moldy cheesey socks! Get some lumber, posts work best but any will do, screw, glue even nail it together on END = effective anvil stand. Frosty The Lucky.
February 5, 20197 yr Don't know about the UK but here in the Colonies about every home improvement/hardware store sells used RR tie's for about $15 U.S. They make good anvil/leg vise stands.
February 5, 20197 yr A lot of the world uses concrete sleepers (rr ties) which would be a bit harder to use. (Which is why friends sometimes ask us in the US to ship them RR spikes.)
