November 25, 20187 yr If you don’t mind sharing, on the ladder pattern, whats the layer count, and cut then forge, or forge then cut? Very clean work, thanks for sharing... and making in the first place.
November 26, 20187 yr Author Jcl: That is pretty much spelled out in my books... it's really not the "layer count" as much as it is contrast between the materials and how they are etched.. JPH
November 26, 20187 yr Speaking about books...any status updates on Number 4????? I hope to see it in print before the mosquitoes carry you off.
November 26, 20187 yr Author Hello: Just finished these a few moments ago.. All are PW in 1095/L-6 with a smatter of meteoric iron...Bovine Ivory of various flavours, Rosewood and red stag grips... Phosphor bronze fittings.. Didn't turn out half bad for an old farte like me working outta his front yard... As for book IV..since Paladin Press closed a year ago next month I had to scramble to find a new publisher, which I did..I need a graphic artist and a photographer..the book is 85% finished... I had some "away" time due to my work of the JJ Perret book we are doing.. JPH
November 26, 20187 yr Thanks for the update; Christmas is coming and your books make excellent presents! (And don't I recall you having one of the anit-malaria mutations found around the Mediterranean? Thalassemias ?)
November 26, 20187 yr Author Thos: Yeah I have that genetic "defect" Mediterranean Thalassemia "B":.. AKA the Asia Minor version of sickle cell anemia...I haven't had any problems for a good while now so...I am not complaining.. well I am knocking off for the night...have another PW sword to finish as well as another 3 or so PW knives of various styles tomorrow ..so I need my beauty sleep... JPH

JPH Oh yeah, your books are on my wish list this year for sure! And if they dont show up as gifts... I will gift to myself. Lol. I was just curious as to the layer count on that particular blade because of the nice chatoyance the picture seems to show. Namely the 4th picture in the original post. Also the method of stock removal then forge, or vice versa because the pattern is very even across the lengts of the blade. The one time ive personally made ladder damascus was cut, then forge. And the ‘steps’ werent as close as id like, so next time I’m forging groves, then grinding flat. I love your shared work. Always nice to have examples to aspire to!
