ThomasPowers
May want to trim off the part where the diameter decreases though.
beammeupscotty
I have read that D2 rod is a good material for corkscrews.
ThomasPowers
of course D2 really needs high tech heat treating to get the most from it. Otherwise you are paying a substantial surcharge and then throwing away what the surcharge was for!
BIGGUNDOCTOR
D2 is a high chromium tool steel that can get super hard. I used it for the punch and die in the die sets I made in my shop. It is also expensive. I would use it for an application more suited to its full capabilities, and use a steel that when heat treated is more tough than brittle-- spring steels, medium carbon, etc .. With D2 you would almost have to use it annealed to keep it tough enough to hold up.
