Samuels
I'm making a forge from a 55 gal. Drum with 2.5" of fire brick around the inner wall of the drum does anyone know how many buners I need.
Reeltree
Not sure how many burners, however will probably need a propane delivery truck as a fuel supply source
ThomasPowers
The burner per number of cubic inches ratio has been posted on this site many times before. It hasn't changed since. What are you trying to accomplish? If you will use this as a forge what do you plan to forge with it? As alluded to; your design is extremely inefficient and wasteful. Generally people go on to explain that by using hard firebrick they can save money on the build completely ignoring that *using* it will use *many* times more dollars/pounds/euros/rupiah/rand/... in fuel than you save on the build. Frosty
If it were an insulated forge like any useful home design posted in the last few years, 60+ well tuned 3/4" NA burners or 30 ea. 1" burners and at least 20+ gls. of propane per hour. Figure maybe an hour to bring to forging temperature and an external shell temperature too high to get very close to without making your jeans smoke. Frosty The Lucky. WayneCoeArtistBlacksmith
The biggest mistake new blacksmiths make is to want a BIG forge. a 20# Propane tank is a good size. Let me know if I can help you. Wayne
ThomasPowers
I keep waiting for the "S" word... Samuels; don't be embarrassed and drop this site just for making what may be a beginner's mistake. If you have read deeper here you probably know why we are acting this way. So please come back and tell us what you want to do with your forge and we can probably help design it to fit your needs, skills, budget. Post a general location and we may be able to direct you to local smiths who might help as well.
