November 14, 20178 yr I was rummaging for steel a while back and found this in the corner of a machine shed on the family farm with a broken handle and did a quick belt sand on it. Since one of my numerous questions was about large diameter stock I had to find the biggest hammer head I had on hand to try out a suggestion today so I shoved a new handle in it. The handle is an engineering handle from Rural King and had to be trimmed a bit to fit into the existing hole. It came out with a distinct angle and the had mass (Or at least the stamp) is around 6#. Anyone have an idea what it was for originally?
November 14, 20178 yr Looks like a stone splitting hammer with a rounded peen from wear or abuse or owners repurposing. In use it was struck with a sledge
November 14, 20178 yr If you’ve got the arm strength and the hammer control, it should be good for heavy drawing out. I have something similar (modified from an old splitting maI’ll) that I think of as my “hand power hammer”. Good find.
November 17, 20178 yr Author Six pounds is a bit much for my arm for more than a few one handed strikes at a time, but definitely moved metal... It could well be a rock splitting hammer since our fields have grown boulders for a good 160 years.
November 17, 20178 yr I picked up one like that at a flea market in Ky. a few years ago the same shape that is just under 4 lbs. I use it to draw out RR spikes mostly.
November 17, 20178 yr Here's an iron city ad showing a couple of similar sledges for masonry work so I would tend to agree with others--splitting rock/brick/concrete block kinda stuff.
November 27, 20178 yr I have one just like it and use it for heavy drawing out since i do not have a power hammer.
