William63
Greetings, I found this 45-55lb. anvil at a motorcycle swap meet. It’s marked on one side with a large “SA” and has some stamped numbers and odd cast figures on the other side. There’s no step between the face and the horn and the Pritchett hole is in the base of the horn as you will see. I rubbed some chalk on it to hopefully make the figures more visible. It’s in really good shape and I’m considering using it for demonstrations. Any ideas on who made these? Thanks for any help!
Black Frog
Columbian anvil. You sometimes see these dual horn patterns from them, come in various sizes.
Daswulf
The c in the triangle makes it a Columbian anvil. I have heard they are pretty good so congrats. Sorry I don't know more.
ThomasPowers
Cast Steel anvil; good brand; made in Cleveland, OH, USA. This type was made for the Latin American trade. (I wonder if the SA stood for South America? BF do you know?)
Black Frog
This was not made in Cleveland. Has the Fagersta Bruk mark, made in Sweden.
ThomasPowers
OK the company's manufacturing was generally based in Cleveland; one of the three anvil manufacturers in Ohio at one time. (I had a post vise once with the clear manufacturer's data on the back of the back jaw including the Cleveland OH) Thanks for the Correction--Now what about the SA? Would that be the logo on the foot on the same side as the triangle C? Inquiring minds want to know!
Black Frog
Yes, the backwards "FB" logo mark.
