cragg
can a stainless steel sink be cut down and used as a coal forge or will the coal heat ruin the stainless steel?
ThomasPowers
Yes it could be done; you need to define what you mean by ruin for the second question but for general definitions no it won't be a problem.
CWest
I have been using a stainless steel sink for the past year. My tuyere is a brake rotor from my car. I filled in around the rotor with 50/50 red clay/sand mix. The clay/sand mix insulates the sink well enough that I can touch the sides of the sink with my hand while a fire is burning. My only complaint at this point is that it is heavy, moving it is a two person job.

BIGGUNDOCTOR
Sell the sink and buy other materials. They do not last long when posted around here.

Frosty
Yes, smiths have been making forges out of sinks for as long as sinks have been around. I have to smile about asking about CUTTING a SS sink down and then asking about the fire ruining the SINK. Oh you were clear enough, the way you worded the question tickled me is all. Frosty The Lucky.
