October 8, 20169 yr A friend has this old anvil. Reminds me of a PW. I Don't know why I didn't take a picture. ......he would like to sell it and needs a fair price. He doesn't know if it's a 100.00 or 300.00 anvil. There is some carbon steel face remaining. No corners to speak of and sections of face are gone. Very lightly stamped with several words. But like most anvils outside of Trenton and Fisher Norris you cannot read the stamping. It does have very deep and bold numbers at the waist. 0 3 3 It feels like 75-80 pounds. rings like a bell. How heavy is it according to the factory stamping?
October 8, 20169 yr (0 x 112) + (3 x 28) + 3 = 87 (Although remember that that would be the weight as new. There well might be weight losses from missing face plate, bits of feet getting cut off, etc.)
October 9, 20169 yr Author So it isn't 87 pounds factory weight? I weighed it on a scale and have 84 pounds. Who is to say the scale is 100% The ap says 87 The owner said he bought it as a 90 pound anvil; it was sold to him as a 90 pounder. I need to ID it. Probably a Peter Wright. I see many of them with the face plate missing. I thought they were the best ?
October 10, 20169 yr "S" do you have a lot of 100+ year old tools used for heavy work that look to be in mint condition? I don't know if I would call them "best"; but Peter Wright was known to be a good brand back when they were sold.
October 10, 20169 yr Well, pictures would help in the ID of it. Hard to guess its a Peter wright just because some face plate is missing and other Peter wrights did that. I'm sure there are other similar makers where that happened. Also it sounds Rough from your description.
October 10, 20169 yr Author I have seen worse. I have used worse. I likely will offer him a price based on weight and condition regardless of who made it. I could use it in my class. If we cannot agree on a price I'm sure he could find it a good home. I'm not looking to expand my collection with overpriced damaged anvils. This is ohio. Folks use them for flower garden decorations and barn door stabilization.
October 10, 20169 yr My anvil missing the most of the face plate but still have some is a William Foster, I also have a Vulcan and a PW? that are severely top deficient. (The PW is ? as it's missing everything above the waist; but Postman thought it was a PW from the base configuration)
