September 28, 20169 yr Hello, I don't know a lot about anvils... I'm looking at this anvil for sale.. I don't know the maker and the seller doesn't know either.. he is trying to help a friend sell it he says its to heavy to pick up and would take two or three people to do it.... I think it may be around 300 lbs. its 31 1/2" long X 4 1/2" wide X 12 1/2" tall... it has this scar/groove on the face.. is this bad ?? should I pass on this anvil and keep looking for a better one ?? thanks JT
September 28, 20169 yr I don't think this is something that you will hear on this forum a lot, but: that anvil is weldable. It is a relatively small gouge, that could be TIG welded with high strength rod without destroying the heat treatment of the rest of the face. Looking at the general outline, plus the hourglass shape of the base, I would hazard to guess that it is a Hay-Budden.
September 29, 20169 yr I . . . GASP . . . . choke, agree John, It needs preheating to about 300f. to minimize the HAZ but that's about all the precautions I'd take to protect the face. Nice looking anvil except for the little sin performed against it. Frosty The Lucky.
September 29, 20169 yr looks to be in good condition apart from that gouge, you have plenty of flat area to work on so just use it. often something like that can be used as a feature at some time in the future
