I don't know your individual situation but it isn't difficult to locate. I mean simple steel stock such as rounds, squares and flats.

SReynolds, I understand what you are saying but I am one of those weird people who get a charge out of junk.  No idea why, just do.  These guys are the steel place.  They pretty much do it all.  If you are in the southwest there is a good chance that your local steel place got their steel from these guys. What they don't do is higher carbon steel, so I have been cruising their scrap to find stuff just to see how it works in the forge, and to see what I can see.

Is that a farrier's supply place or your shop?  Either way I could hang out there.

not without justifiable reason, crush injuries are a nightmare, I tell people if they climb up on the piles of scrap they are banned from my property. I ask them to repeat what I just said so there is no confusion.

aanndd....4 minutes later, for at least 30% of visitors I'm telling them to have a safe trip, dont ever come back.

and I dont even run a business, its just my private stash!

I wear a bright red hat and *always* check in with the yard crew when I visit my small local scrapyard and I still treat all moving equipment as if the operator has a secret grudge against me and may start chasing me around the yard at any time!  As such I am a welcome visitor and they even will stash stuff they think I will like.  If I saw a piece up in the pile I'll ask them to use their claw to bring it down to safe level.
