Eric Morgan
Started with a short length of 1/2" round stock. Tapered the handle end down to try to practice tapering, as I want to make some drifts and punches to eventually make my own hammers. Also tried a couple different ways of drawing out, and the edge of the big radius worked wonderfully for that... Also got started making a knife from a Nicholson file I'd gotten that was broken to practice making knives. Still have a lot of work to do on it, but it is a start I suppose... Frosty
My only recommendation for the coal rake is make the handle longer and forge the rake end to a flat point like a leaf to make clearing the air grate easier.Good job, carry on.Frosty The Lucky. Eric Morgan
Hadn't thought of making a point for clearing the air grate... I was really wanting to get to forging so I didn't do any drawing out of the middle of the handle... Gonna try and do that tomorrow. Thanks for the advice and praise Frosty! Frosty
I just calls em like I sees em.A point on the end of the rake is more useful than the extra handle if you need to choose. A coal fire doesn't really have flames and doesn't radiate heat like a camp fire so you don't need to stay back as far. Charcoal more so but not bad.Frosty The Lucky. Eric Morgan
I believe I have plenty of stock to draw that handle out a good bit more... Good practice too, I'd imagine. Thanks again!
swedefiddle
Good Morning, Mr. FordAnytime you make something useful and it works is a good thing. Especially when starting out.First = Function, Second = Form. I'll bet this one is 100% better than your last one!!!Form is making it technically or artisticly pleasing. That will come with time.Welcome to the Family!!Neil

RangerGord
I make a lot of simple things like fire pokers, trap stakes, and crude tongs. It seems to be good practice and is surprisingly fun. Especially if I get my materials for free.
