Advice/info on Dutch Anvil

Recommended Posts

Hi all, this anvil is coming up at a local auction soon. I have not been able to find out much information about the brand, am hoping someone might recognise the brand? The only info I have currently is that this anvil was imported to Australia from Indonesia. Seeing as there is a long history of dutch presence/colonisation in Indonesia, it seems reasonable to assume it is indeed a Dutch import and may be quite old. The brand does match a trading company that had considerable presence in Indonesia.

It is obviously cast, I am interested in figuring out if it is cast steel or cast iron. I have not had the opportunity to do a proper rebound test. It is hard to tell from the photos, it is a very large anvil, the other anvil in the background is a 2 cwt anvil.

I really appreciate any info or advice you may have.

A little sleuthing by Mr. Google shows that the firm of "Van der Lind, Teves & R. S. Stokvis*" was a major importer and one-stop shopping, turn-key supplier of industrial equipment for Indonesian tea & rubber plantations, tin mines, etc. from about 1900+/- until WWII broke out.

So I am betting that this was a quality product from a quality dealer. It looks like it was used, but well taken care of.

* Later shortened to LindeTeves & Stokvis. Sort of like Peck, Stowe & Wilcox becoming Pexto.

**Totally off topic.** Anybody else remember that old TV show, "Tales of the Brass Monkey" ? Yeah, I had not thought of it in years, either.

Looks like and interesting anvil.  Hope you can acquire it and start making stuff on it again.

Welcome aboard glad to have you. If you put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the IFI gang live within visiting distance.

Beautiful anvil, good score. She sure cleans up nice.

Thanks fellas... One thing that i am intrigued to know it how much it weighs... I would be interested to hear some estimates based on the anvil pattern and some dimensions... Unfortunately, i dont think the bathroom scales are going to cut it!
I will shoot up to the shed and get some measurements...
