September 9, 201411 yr Finally made up and mounted a striking vise in my new shop I built. Basically I found a nice heavy 4.5" vise cheap that someone had cut the leg off :( . Had some disc bolt that made a perfect stub leg, so I did a heavy bevel and welded it up with 7018. Mounted is opposite my anvil on the same stump. Forged a staple for the leg. Im trying to think up a nice clamp for the jaws that will let me lay large stock across the anvil, clamp it then use sledge.
September 9, 201411 yr I like the way you have that set up. Is that a DIY anvil or one of them fancy store bought anvils? Ernest
September 9, 201411 yr My striking vise. A 8 1/4" Peddinghaus. The stand is on a 1/2" steel plate, the stand weighs in around 300lbs.
September 9, 201411 yr Jake, So that would be a lift with your legs type of thing. Nice looking hardware.
September 14, 201411 yr Many vises are set to high for hammer work, good for filing and finishing just not hammering. Both of these are good hammer solutions. Of course the big heavy tools are necessary for serious hammer work. Good job guys!
September 14, 201411 yr The floor plate came out of my local steel yards "scrap" area. I think it was some kind of a jig plate that was used very little. It's 1/2" thick and weighs 250lbs. This vise sits around 8" lower than my other vises so it works really good for upsetting or other projects that require heavy hammering.
September 15, 201411 yr I constructed a striking vise several years ago and find it very good for those awkward positions. It is not a cureall but it certainly is nice to help. David G carry on
