mlhoward Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 This anvil was used by my great-grandfather. I do not know where or when he got it. There are no markings than I can see. I took some pics but not sure how to post them. Quote
Clint B Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 If you can load the pics on your pc (I put them on my desktop) then you can click on the attach file at the bottom of the frame when you are adding a post. Choose your desk top from there then find them and open one at a time. It's not real hard, just takes a little figurin'! Good luck! Quote
jmccustomknives Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Yikes! :o That one looks ancient, possibly colonial. Can't wait for the experts to chime in. Bet it's over 200 years old. Give it a place of honor and make beautiful things on it. ;) Quote
njanvilman Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 It looks like a pre-1820 English made anvil. Sometimes called a "colonial anvil". Considering it is probably over 200 years old, it is in remarkably good shape. Quote
the iron dwarf Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 looks quite like the proportions of a 5th foot I have, thick waist, hardly any heel, no step or pritchel and in picture 2 the top feet seem much further apart Quote
mlhoward Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 According to my late great-aunt, my great-grandfather had the anvil when he moved to Memphis from rural Mississippi. His father was a doctor who took payment in trade, so it's very possible the anvil was a payment for medical services in the post Civil War era. Quote
