June 28, 201411 yr Hi, I'm thinking about making my own anvil so I can get into blacksmithing, and I was wondering if it would be possible to make an anvil that could hold up against the heat and pounding for blacksmithing. Any info would be great, thanks.
June 28, 201411 yr Any large piece of solid steel *is* an anvil; so making it consists of finding it; transporting it to the shop and mounting it on a support. This site has several thousand posts on this subject already so I encourage you to use the search function and read them first. Note the recent video posted about proper tools---where they are doing decent work using rocks. If you are around central New Mexico *or* the El Paso area let me know and we can go to the scrap yard and get an anvil.
June 28, 201411 yr search brazeal style anvil, just a simple piece of 2" thick mild steel on edge, with different radiuses for drawing.. I used one before finding a "real" anvil and I still use it all the time, very versatile. youtube has a video on making one too.
June 28, 201411 yr here is one I made earlier, its a lightweight but they are useful, an anvil can be any shape, a sledge hammer head is good, a piece of rail gives you more choice of surfaces
June 28, 201411 yr This was my first "anvil" 75 lbs of I beam. Not bad if you stay over the center web.
June 28, 201411 yr Here is one I made. I also posted two videos of me making the thing. What I did is completely unnecessary and for most forging, a simple block of steel bought as a cut off or scrap will serve you well.
