JimsShip
I have an empty quarter keg and was wondering if I could use it as a shell for a gas forge... It would be lined, do you think it will hold up?
Geoff Keyes
I don't see why not. Cardboard would work if you lined it properly. Geoff
Frosty
Sure, even an aluminum keg will work with 2" of Kaowool or equivalent. Frosty The Lucky.
eseemann
That reminds me of the time Alton Brown used a cardboard box (2 of them) to make a cold smoker for salmon.
Dodge
Ask Garey Ford aka garey here. He makes beer keg forges :)
JimsShip
Thanks! I'll drop him a note. I'm glad it would work out, I couldn't find a welder to cut a propane tank, and Frosty gave me the idea to use chimney pipe, but when looking for some, the stuff i found was way pricey, so this may make a nice option. ThomasPowers
I've seen a gas forge at a professional's shop where he just took a roll of kaowool and put a couple of pieces of binding wire around it and stuck a burner in it when he needed a larger forge to do a specific one time job...The shell is basically to product the innards and cut down on fibers floating in the breeze. Frosty
I've used hardware cloth to hold the Kaowool in place but more as an example that nothing special is really necessary. Something I've been thinking about to contain the fibers in something like that is high temp paint on the outside. Encapsulating the fibers is all that's really necessary. Think it'll work if not, why not? Frosty The Lucky.
