VaughnT
Very nice hammer. Drilling a hole helps keep the eye straight, but you might want to think about using a series of smaller holes in a line for the next hammer. This leaves more meat to form the cheeks and is still really easy to do. All you need is a little chisel to cut through the web between holes. I have a 1" bolt that I've been meaning to make into a drift so I can turn another 1" bolt into a hammer similar to yours.
Charles R. Stevens
Vaughn, weygers shows a method of drilling a small hole, drifting both sides to size with a drift. Then forging the sides down to form a oblong hole.
