ralphy
hey everyone, one of my kids asked me to make an insence burner,sooo... the gears got turning and i took some pipe , i believe 1/4" and a fender washer. i drilled some holes in the pipe and made a taper , then chiseled & cuped the washer and welded it to the pipe "stem" it looked ok, but it didn't draft well. any how, does anyone have an idea or plan for mushrooms, and/or insence burners,(cone, stick, or oil.) looking forward to seeing whats out there. thanks. J W Bennett
Have to dig out the old albums and sit and meditate on this one.BOG John
rthibeau
all the incense burners I've seen are just a holder for the incense and a place for the ashes to fall. You could flatten the pipe and drill one hole in an end to place the incense stick...put a short scroll on that end just for looks
rthibeau
...but then again...if you let the imagination wander.....cones or oil...a stick too maybe

ralphy
Thank you John, that was my first attempt at a mushroom,(1/4" pipe & fender washer). the other mushroom was made with 1/2" pipe & a piece of sheet metal 4" dia. the cone incense smoke rises up the stem and rolls out from under the cap. looks cool;)
julian
have you guys ever seen the incense holder/candle stick made out of a pair of tongs? It may be in the blacksmithing book up for auction on IFI right now. I like those incense holders very cool
High Plains Forge
Awesome incense holder Ralphy. You should take a few down to the local head shop to make some cash! Here's one I did a while back, nothing too special, but it works:
yesteryearforge
Julian I believe what you are talking about is a rush lamp Allthough they can be used for insense they were designed to use bullrushes ( they came about about 200 years ago ) Mike
Blacksmith Jim
Here is a picture I found of a Rush Lamp. I had never heard of them before, but it sure makes good common sense. I love common sense. I wish we all had more of it :)
ralphy
Thanks for the input and encouraging comments everyone. I haven't thought about using a R/R spike, High Plains, And I got a lot of them laying around. Yours looks really cool! Julian, I have not seen or heard of what you describe, but would like to see one, hey maybe you or Yesteryear could make one for all to see;)

Finnr
just had to try my hand at doing a mushroom. Here's what I came up with.http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/4396
J W Bennett
Finnr, Nice shroom:) Did a demo over the weekend and played with a couple of rail spikes. Been wanting to try Ducks heads. These are the first ones I've made, Flattened the middle to make incense cone burners. Made quite an attention getter. People kept coming back to see how they were coming along. ThomasPowers
Mike; I can document the rush holder back about 1000 years; there used to be special pans for soaking your rushes in tallow before using them too!
ralphy
Finnr, nice job on the shroom! John, I like the ducks, would like to try to make some, good work! :)
sfDuck
Duck's ....What Ducks...............Oh them ducks.....black ducks with ash on they're tails; you still won't catch one!............Grin
Quenchcrack
I like them Ducks, too. Wonder if you could drill a small hole in the neck to hold an insense stick too? Gonna call my ducks "M R 2 Ducks" just for the unbelivers in the crowd. However, I remember making RR Spike knives by hand and hammer. Too much like work for this old poot. The ducks look a bit easier. I once made a matching knife and fork out of RR spikes that turned out well. Even Paw Paw said he was going to use the idea but I don't know if he ever did.
