Thanks Frosty, i had read a few conflicting reports of flux or no flux with copper, ill give that a shot the next time i try it.  i was outdoors in broad daylight so no chance to try and gauge color temp, had to just let the metal melt together to say for certain :)

You don't actually need flux if you sand it shiny but a sprinkle of borax makes welding easier. Getting borax to stick cold is easy, dissolve it in water and dip.

So what exactly are the steps to making this?
It looks like 3 pieces of stock welded at each end and twisted, then untwisted maybe half a turn?

@coldiron: thanks :) i've always loved the look of copper so that was what i reached for first, plus i picked up several yards of scrap electrical wire from a remodel project, and i could work it with just a free standing propane torch instead of actually putting up bricks for a forge.  real quick and dirty setup.

 

@Jim:  my procedure above will differ from coldiron's by virtue of the parent stock.  so i wont presume to speak for that process.  the twisting is the same as for a basket twist though, twist it up, then back it out to taste.

love it, I filled some of my baskets with ball bearings, heat wouldn't be a factor to them either.
