oldanvilyoungsmith
Made this up the other day based on the design I saw Vaughn use here (link). I really like the design, nice and simple, and works well. As you can see, I modified the design a bit to suit the materials I had. I modified a turnbuckle so I can set it up easily and tighten up the spring for the holding power I want. Now that I've got it together, I want to get a new spring that's stronger, and shorter. There's a bolt I put onto my anvil stand that the end of the turnbuckle goes to.
swedefiddle
Looks Good!! I've also seen it with with a section of motorcycle chain with a stirrup at the bottom, step on it to activate. Batteries Not Included. :) Neil
Marksnagel
Nice design. I like the handle. Mine goes through the hardie hole and hooks to a board that I step on like Neil's. I can apply more pressure as needed.

VaughnT
Awesome job! I really like the look of the rope bail. The spring on mine is 18lbs, and it really puts a bite on the stock. I think this is because so little of the hold-down is actually in contact with the stock being held. Love that big honkin' chain keeping your anvil from running off! Dale M.
Recently saw something like this but it was sort of a stirrup that went around heel of anvil and left hardy hole exposed so if you needed a tool in hardy hole you still had a spring loaded hold down...
