What kind of file for knifemaking?

Featured Replies

Hi blacksmiths,

I'm making knives to start off with but I'm not sure what shape for a file I need.

The file is going to be used to make a bevel with either a scandi or convex grind.

I have access to pretty much all shapes.

I use all shapes! Hope that helps! Oh and what Steve said! :)

Too be honest, it's not really helping at all. I just would like to know the shape I would have to use the most to create these bevels and grinds.

And Steve would you please direct me to a topic dedicated to what files to use in knifemaking?

You're a bladesmith, forge it to whatever shape you need!

I would be more worried about the makeup of the file steel, rather than the shape. Some files don't harden very well.

In the knife forums balde making 101 we covered files with desriiptions and pictures and told how they are used and showed ways to getg ore work done on a blade. Start with 101 and then through the series to 109....Read those and do some shop time and you will jump far ahead of other new folks inhere that will not read but want us to answer in these little boxes...We did that work so anyone couild review and perhaps print shop copies.....Have fun!

I read it wrong and I apologize. I thought you meant what files to use to finish..... I have used Nicholson lathe files and also flat files. I first anneal then remove all teeth from file before proceeding to forging. This will reduce cold shuts and stress risers. I also agree with Rich and Steve......Lots of good info in the knife chat logs.

For "plunge cuts" a "goofy file" is a handy thing. It is a flat file with round edges. They can be had from the better stocked chainsaw vendors. Here in logging country they can be had for $6 each.
