I am trying to identify what kind of metal this is. 

Magnetic?  Will a file touch it?  What is rough density?  Is the dark end black scale or oil residue?  Spark test results?

Same ??s aessubys had above plus where did it come from, did you turn down the halp that is bright

By the look of it, it is either scrapbinium or scrapyardium.

Maybe obtanium, its close cousin is unobtanium. :rolleyes:

looks like a King Pin for a big truck (dump,rig or tractor ) .

If it's important to know, take it to a scrap yard and ask if they'll use their laser spectrometer on it. It might cost you a box of donuts or an after work 6 pack of beer but if you gotta know, you gotta know.
