August 6, 201213 yr I have a anvil with a large R on the side of it,has good rebound and ring,it is 33.5 inches long and weighs 250pounds,does anyone know who made it.
August 6, 201213 yr Author Sorry my camera is not working right now,the bottom is flat has a large R on the side bottom half.
August 6, 201213 yr What country are you in? Does your anvil have any handling holes? Does it have a depression on the bottom and if so what does it look like? Does the R stand out or is it punched into the side of the anvil? Any signs of it being a traditionally made anvil---forge welding seams, applied face, etc?
August 6, 201213 yr Author I am in the USA,the R stands out,the bottom is flat,no depression.it has a top plate, cant tell if there is a seem at the waist.
August 7, 201213 yr The info you gave us isn't going to help. Sorry. Have a friend with an iPhone? Or any phone with a camera? Without pics we're in the dark.
August 7, 201213 yr The R standing out means the anvil is cast (or partially cast) If the face is a step that is larger than the body, then it is likely cast with a false plate, likely cast iron because false plates are not commonly used on solid steel, or steel faced anvils...but without pictures it is difficult to tell. Phil
August 7, 201213 yr Author Well I guess the make of it doesnt realy matter,I bought it to use,has a nice ring, realy good rebound and is big should be alot of fun.
August 7, 201213 yr If it has good rebound it should have a steel face to it. It may be solid cast steel since it has good ring. Phil
August 7, 201213 yr Hopefully it's a Rennato. http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/851387/ ?
August 7, 201213 yr Yeah that looks like a very nice anvil. If you can, some pictures with better lighting would be much appreciated, ie base, waist at all four sides, feet(front and back), sides, etc. Some of us who use anvils are also students of them and a new type of one(at least to me) like yours would provide much valuable info. Is there any other markings that you can see? does the base (underside) have a ridge along its edges? There were only a few cast steel anvil makers in the US so this could be valuable from an info standpoint. Thanks
August 8, 201213 yr http://www.knifeforu...php?tid/851387/ ? Yes, I was thinking of those. I couldn't view images and I forgot that he had the 2 'R's on his anvils instead of 1. I guess it's a moot point since the anvil punch bought is very different from the Renato anvils. I have spoken to the German journeyman blacksmith who has his original anvil that Renato modelled his 630ish pound German pattern after. This man vouched that Renato makes some very nice anvils.
August 8, 201213 yr Looks like there is a parting line on the base, casting? Something odd going on along the seam between face and body, electric weld and ground or mushroomed and hammered back to shape? Hard to see for sure on the mobile screen.
August 9, 201213 yr Author It actualy weighs 300 pounds, dropped a 3/4 ball bearing from 10 inches bounced back 8
August 9, 201213 yr It actualy weighs 300 pounds, dropped a 3/4 ball bearing from 10 inches bounced back 8 Nice rebound! At 300# you won't need to look for a larger anvil. You may want to look for an 80#-150# anvil for travel if you start doing shows. How do you plan to mount it? Phil
August 9, 201213 yr Author I have smaller anvils these big ones are hard to find around here, wright now I have it on a block of wood
