jeremy k Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 . Here is a mild steel header I made for making copper nails (3/8 " x 1-1/2 " flat forged into a swage block for a dome). The square hole opening in the header is a frog hair over 1/8 " square, and I started with 3/16 " solid copper wire (#4). The nails are approx 7/8 " long and have about a 3/8 " head. This job only requires 56 copper nails, so I have a few left from the 20 made so far, not that many compared to the old days of making nails for a living. Quote
MLMartin Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Are you starting with annealed copper and just forging the nails cold? Quote
jeremy k Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 It's just grounding wire from Menards hammered as is and warm when heading. Quote
bigfootnampa Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Nice looking nails! It looks like a lot of fun! Good looking headers... WOW you really domed them high! I like copper. I love handmade nails! You are a lucky man! Quote

Syd Partridge Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Nice job. (3/8 " x 1-1/2 " flat forged into a swage block for a dome) Are you forging the nail profile or swaging through the header? Quote
jeremy k Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Syd - standard nail making process. Forge square taper to desired length, head the nail in header. Quote
Steve Sells Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I may as well say it Jeremy, you nailed that one ;) Quote
Chad J Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 That's awesome!!! Jeremy What type of project is it? I may as well say it Jeremy, you nailed that one ;) Very good Steve! I like that. Quote
jeremy k Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 . This is a copper clad range hood for a kitchen that I had to make the 56 nails for (attaching the corner trim). The carpenters just need to put trim around the top next to the ceiling. Quote
jeremy k Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Thanks - Definately not a big job, but I really like the way it looks. Wish I had a kitchen that would warrant this style exhaust hood. Quote
Ten Hammers Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 We of course know the solution to that Jeremy. Build one..... B) Quote
