March 12, 201214 yr . Here is a mild steel header I made for making copper nails (3/8 " x 1-1/2 " flat forged into a swage block for a dome). The square hole opening in the header is a frog hair over 1/8 " square, and I started with 3/16 " solid copper wire (#4). The nails are approx 7/8 " long and have about a 3/8 " head. This job only requires 56 copper nails, so I have a few left from the 20 made so far, not that many compared to the old days of making nails for a living.
March 12, 201214 yr Author It's just grounding wire from Menards hammered as is and warm when heading.
March 12, 201214 yr Nice looking nails! It looks like a lot of fun! Good looking headers... WOW you really domed them high! I like copper. I love handmade nails! You are a lucky man!
March 12, 201214 yr Nice job. (3/8 " x 1-1/2 " flat forged into a swage block for a dome) Are you forging the nail profile or swaging through the header?
March 12, 201214 yr Author Syd - standard nail making process. Forge square taper to desired length, head the nail in header.
March 15, 201214 yr That's awesome!!! Jeremy What type of project is it? I may as well say it Jeremy, you nailed that one ;) Very good Steve! I like that.
March 16, 201214 yr Author . This is a copper clad range hood for a kitchen that I had to make the 56 nails for (attaching the corner trim). The carpenters just need to put trim around the top next to the ceiling.
March 18, 201214 yr Author Thanks - Definately not a big job, but I really like the way it looks. Wish I had a kitchen that would warrant this style exhaust hood.
