October 31, 201114 yr Hello All, If you happen to have a self contained hammer I have a request. Set you bathroom scale under the ram when at rest (I used a small jack, just past the die, to lift and set it back on the scale). My 3B Nazel has a weight of 230 pounds for ram and die. This seems light to me, but you get what you get. What do others have for a ram weight on their hammers? Ric
October 31, 201114 yr ric is it not likely that there is some friction resulting from the ram touching the bore . try tapping the hammer with a great big hide mallet and see if you can put some weight on .
October 31, 201114 yr I have weighed a few Massey 'Clear Space' rams, and a few smaller Alldays & Onions ones. They have all been scarily close to catalogue specs. (I have weighed the odd large anvil block and they have been within a few % aswell!) It could be your ram has had a broken dovetail in the past and had a chunk machined off the end? or as Owen says it might be a bit sticky in the bore and box, you could try the experiment again when the hammer is nice-n-hot-n-loose to see if it makes a difference!
October 31, 201114 yr That's right on the spec for an older Nazel. They seem to have increased the weight over the years.
November 1, 201114 yr I'll check the 2b but the 4b ram isnt here right now. I can check it when we get the parts back in house.
November 1, 201114 yr Author 1365 is my hammer number I recall. It has a gross weight of 13,300..heavy for the nazel...so I do not know. I do not believe that the ram is stuck in any way..the weight is accurate. Ric
November 11, 201114 yr Ok, Phillip broke the mechanical hammer ice. My 85# Kane and Roach mechanical has an actual ram weight of 95#. On a related note, I don't recommend using your wife's bathroom scale unless she is more tolerant of cracked dial covers and oil drips than my wife is. ;)
November 11, 201114 yr Just tell her, she's perfect the way she is and doesn't need that scale anyway...

I am a blacksmith...I believe that proves my wife is tolerant......its when the stainless mixing pots end up filled with wax and boiled linseed oil that she gets a bit testy. Ric
