April 24, 201115 yr I have a peice of staneless steel that wouln't spark, what tipe of staneless steel could it be?
April 24, 201115 yr Mithrael? spark how? a bench grinder or a hand wheel? Most 300 series stainless spark very little some long reddish non bursting sparks, is all you can expect to see.
April 28, 201115 yr Metal. It is absolutely, definately metal. Does a magnet stick to it at room temperature? Does a magnet stick to it after you've packed it in dry ice?
April 28, 201115 yr Dont forget 200 series SS. Not all stainless is non magnetic, nor have a high carbon. Testing by sparks can only help you guess so much, as I always say, ya never know about found metals. Hammer away and have fun with it.
May 5, 201115 yr I got it to spark I just had to use more RPM's and it is non magnetic. Two tests remaining: first, put it in a strong magnetic field and see if it can be temporarily magnetized. If so, you've got ferritic stainless. Next, dunk it in liquid nitrogen & see if a magnet sticks to it when it is really cold. If so, and if you've determined it is not ferritic, you'ved got austenitic stainless. The more important question, of course, is "whatcha gonna make from it?"
