Cole Cross
I have acquired a piece of railroad track to use for a temporary anvil until I can get a better one. My question is that when I hammer on it, it is extremely loud. If I hold it down against the stump with my left hand and hammer with my right it deadens the sound. What can I quiet it's vibration noise?

MattBower
drill soe holes in the bace and bult or screw it down to the stump. Yep. You don't have to drill through the rail, though; some big lag screws with heavy duty washers tightened down on the lip of the rail should do. (Or use railroad spikes to hold it down. That's what they're for! Predrilling the holes a little undersized will help you keep from splitting your stump.) A little silicon sealant or construction glue between the base and the stump may also help. Another traditional way to quiet an anvil is to stick a big magnet (e.g., speaker magnet) to it. CurlyGeorge
Don't know how long the track is, but you could also wrap a chain around it a couple of times. That's what I did to my Trenton anvil and it works great. :D
ThomasPowers
sand bag over the non-working end, inner tube strips wrapped tight around it. cast in concrete, etc...
Cole Cross
Cool, I am going to try the drill and screw solution. I think this should work quite well. Thanks.
Frosty
Ear protection. Not annoying the neighbors or wife is important to be sure but protecting your hearing is top of the priority list. Frosty the Lucky.
pkrankow
Even after taking steps to mute the anvil, ear protection is a very good idea. My Trenton is strapped down tight and wrapped in chain. It is still too loud for me without ear plugs. Before taking these steps it was too loud WITH earplugs. Phil
