EWCTool Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 I returned home from a trip and aquired many feet of old drive shaft and axle shafting. I beleive that the drive shaft was from a well drilling rig. I want to make anvil tools and hammer heads from them. I would like some advice on how others have gone about doing this. double_edge2 Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 (edited) yup...i have just done a diagonal pein out of 40mm square axle and a hardie block from 45mm...k1045 is the stuff i get, called axle material here. but your local engineer or experienced forum surfer from here should give you an idea of your material make up, do the spark test with a grinder failing that, and the smart cookies on here will inform you of anealing, heat treatment, hammer heat windows if any, sizes, and cautions. Oak Hill Forge Posted August 20, 2009 Share Posted August 20, 2009 EWCTool = where are you located ? I'm in Waynesboro, Va. I got some hex shaped shafting at an auction in McDowell Virginia.
