  1. KEWL! let us know how it works
  2. Thanks guiys I appreciate it. She still remembers me rebuilding a 25 lb lg it was about 3:30 am when I got the thing all together. I figured with a 2x4 it wouldn't be so oud. She thought the house was being demolished! The shop is a bit further away nw. :)
  3. WOOHOO! Plans for this weekend, get up early 4:00 am and finish forgeing my anniversary gift to my wife. anniversary is june 10. We've been married 31 years, and yes she is a heck of a woman to put up with me that long!
  4. Good form, sir! :)
  5. you can use my "sharp" edge for a letter opener! ~
  6. A blacksmith's epitaph composed by himself. My sledge and hammer lie reclined, My bellows too have lost their wind, My fire's extinct, my forge decayed. And in the dust my vice is laid. My iron spent, my coal is gone. My nails are drove
  7. I looked up your new anvil on the net. Now I am jealous! (BOG) enjoy!:)
  8. WOW. Congrats on the new anvil! In the book Practical Blacksmithing, (a compendeum of articles written by Blacksmiths around the turn of the century), there are a couple articles pertainging to rounding the edges. I highly recomend this old book, there are a lot of information in there. One articles states it is his belief that chipped edges on the anvil are the result of using a sharp edge on the anvil. Most All the chipped anvils I have seen have undressed edges. he suggests a 1/8", section and a 1/4" section. That is what I did with my anvil, I included a 1/2" radius also,I have one small section that has a sharp corner on it., I find I don't use it often. Most metalurgical articles warn of the stress cracking from sharp corners, in the work. Why do I then need a sharp edge except in limited situations. my .02 enjoy the new anvil.
  9. 1045 heat treat specs 1045 Carbon Steel Bar - Interlloy 4140 heat treat specs http://www.metalsuppliersonline.com/Research/Property/metals/25.asp I don't see anything here that requires special heat treat equipment it doesn't need high hold rates as do some stainless and more exotic alloys. Both steels should both be heat treatable in the average shop. Blacksmith's have been making their own tools since,well..since they started making blacksmiths. The addition of chrome makes the the 4140 tougher than the 1045. If I didn't have any 4140 I'd use 1045. If I had to buy some steel I'd buy 4140. the 4140 specs don't show it, but the proper welding rod for it is also 7018. which makes it easy for building tooling. Weld then heat treat. IF I was making an anvil I'd defianantly use 4140 for the top plate. it would be way tougher than the 1045.
  10. I like GOOD solid facts, thanks guys!
  11. sheesh MArkh chill out. brush the chip off your shoulder
  12. http://ftpforge.chez-alice.fr/krusty.pdf i got this off a ? slavic or russian knife site.
  13. Iron Kiss Hammers
  14. Do you make your rowels also?
  15. Glenn, no i'm not saying ever thing should be screened. I think y'all just need to let it go. Ranting about someones posting method is really of no value. There was another forum, no longer with us, one of the posters, mispelled a lot and his sentance structure was terrible. He got ranted at so much he quit posting. He had some good stuff to say, but it took a little bit of extra effort sometimes to understand his post. THE REASON for his bad structureing was he had had a stroke and was doing the best he could to relate his years of smithing experience. Toleranace is a good thing to learn. It's just little irritating that in a free discussion so much empasis is place on "the right type of question" IF you don't know you don't know. Constant belittling of dumb newbie questions will drive people away. one of my old mentors taught me to listen. Listen to ever thing, if it is a basic question, that at least makes us stop to think. How exactly do I do that. Sometimes in a familiar task our brain just automaticly does some of the steps It may not be apparent to those that have never done the task. A good teacher ALSO learns from his pupils. Many time a student not knowing the "correct" method comes up with a different method, sometimes surprisingly good. there is more than one way to skin a cat The original intent of the post was I think very good. which to me in a nutshell was, (donot post something you have no knowledge of claiming it to be valid) check it out first, or label it as hearsay. I think we divirged from it and got back into complaining about dumb questions and literacy again. I for one was resposible for that I apologize. Steve Sells, I apologize for getting bent with you.
  16. VERY Nice work indeed!
  17. SHEESH STEVE, you are way to serious. my point is ever time somebody mentions A post or csatergory you go into a rant. makes for a well less friendly atmosphere. makes for less people wanting to post, and less ideas exchanged. Well, maybe that's why you do it??? "The suggestion of all posts being moderated/approved before getting posted to the forum would actually mean some posts would NEVER get posted. " sorry that was sarcasm __________________
  18. I like that lot. Good Work! I was expecting something made out of showel and rake. :)
  19. I read post #32 what did that have to do with the original post?
  20. Steve yep its a joke. General discussion in most forums is exactly what THOMAS DEAN posted about above. Imagine my confusion when things get subdivided. Lets divide ever body into catergories, newbie, journeyman and mastersmith. me I'll stay with the newbies* * The more I learn the less I know. live and let live. Does this thread actually belong in Blacksmithing general discusion?
  21. Maybe the mods could read each post before it is posted and then return it to the postee for correction and clarification. that should keep out the undesirables
  22. thaniks alot Glen. now I'M REALLY HUNGRY! :)
  23. KEWL. I showed my daughter once when she was abouit 12, she made one hook and that was enough for her. Good girl though, she will stick to something if it needs doing. She helped me cut up a deer once when I was sick, I truly needed her help. She just had to stop ever once inawhile and go outside and gag a bit, then right back in. gobsmacked? is that like flabbergasted, awestruck etc. ?
