  1. I've cleaned all the smaller parts and the real color is showing up! Along with the face mask, I've ordered a grinder 100mm cup twisted wire brush to clean the two big parts. Many pieces are certainly not original, but it'll work fine for a long time! =)
  2. Hey guys! Sorry for the delay. She's here! I disassembled the top from the legs, converted the motor from 240V to 120V and took a closer look onto the piece that encompasses the air piping, ash dump and clinker breaker (guess it's called tuyere, but correct me if I'm wrong). As far as I can tell (which is not very far) the piece is cast iron and quite robust. The inner part of the clinker breaker has a lot of independent movement from the rod it's connected to (is this called a gap?) and IDK yet how they're put together. Now, as I'll not be able to cheaply control the blower's speed, I though about putting a air gate on the air entrance. Is this a good solution? I've seen somewhere someone using what's supposed to be the ash dump as an air gate of sorts. Could any of you guys share some tips and designs that might help? Cheers all! VID_20200519_211028013.mp4
  3. That moment when you simply put an anvil under your arm and take it away from your work. Does your anvil also have a lot of dents on it's side? Why and how railway workers did all those?
  4. hahah... Yeah, that was not specific at all. I disassembled the vise and soaked the smaller parts on soap water.
  5. I've soaked the thing in soap water and got myself a face shield after reading all this. Didn't think powered wired brushes were so dangerous. I'll keep using a hand wire brush for now, while the face shield is on its way. Thanks a lot, guys. You've probably avoided an accident here. Cheers all!
  6. Hey, Frosty. Hope you are OK. I got here while searching for "air gate" - The Pro-Tip #1 is really accurate! I'll share my story with you, as hearing other people's story helped me a lot when the same happened to me. Since losing my dad at 7y, I always avoided being too close to pets and any animal, 'cause one they they'd inevitably die and I was too afraid to feel more losses. So whenever my mom would go "Hey, let's get a dog" I'd ask her "please don't, it will die and my world end once again". On a Sunday, when I was about 12, we went out to a big pet shop that we have here called "Cobasi" (it's more like a pet's mall than a pet shop), and there they had an adoption fair going on. One little puppy, at the time called "Debby" just got my mom's attention and she ended up bring the dog home, against all my will and appeals. About a week latter, we name she "Deborah" (it's kinda "normal" to put people's names on pets over here in Brazil) and I already could never live without her. She was kinda famous at my school. All my friends liked her and we'd even create stories where she was the mains character. She had a very strong personality and I'm not wrong to say that like she was a person; she acted very much like a person, she just couldn't speak words. When I started loosing weight she was beside me. We used to go over to a park near home and run around it every single night for 4 years with no stop. She went through 2 surgeries to get rid of cancer, but at the end it got the best of her. She lived by our side for 15 beautiful years and I cannot remember a day that made me be regretful of loving her as much as I did. Two months before my baby boy was born, on March 23rd 2016, I took her to the vet and had her put down. I stood by her side. I thanked her for being by my side. She slept and a part of me died at that table that day. I remember I smoked 4 packs that day. Could barely stand on my own. I remember felling anesthetized, like I was out of my body - it was terrible. I feel your pain. What you did was the best that could have been done. Please don't feel guilty. Keep your spirit elevated. Cheers!
  7. I brushed it a little bit with the cup brush and it seems like I do not need to clean it before. Thanks! I don't own one, unfortunately. I'll go with a cup for my drill, like @pnut. Thanks for the advice, though.
  8. That's quite alright. Thanks for sharing and please, do get some rest! =) Oh, the vice is really greasy. All over it. You know, when grease is old enough to not function as grease but still steins everything around it? Should I remove it before wire brushing it? Also, if you need any sort of help with computers, feel free reach out. I work all day long with them! I tried looking for the definition of FINL and got some interesting results, which I believe are wrong: Cheers all!
  9. Note taken. Thanks! Frosty, How many years are the photos apart? And maybe I missed something, but isn't it the Trenton on the green tripod?
  10. That's good advice. I almost always use protection glasses and gloves (maybe except when filing or using sandpaper. I do have an apron and gloves made from split leather (I think that's what it's called - here we call "couro de raspa", which is the inner most layer of the leather), but now I'll go after some face mask. I took a look at that Trewax composition and it seems like usual carnaúba wax we find here at local stores. It's not pure carnaúba wax, 'cause, as you've mentioned it's very brittle and that's because that thing is HARD - it's diluted in some type of petroleum byproduct. I actually own a can of it, so that's good. But I don't own a torch (yet). I thought i could disassemble it and heat it over the oven, for instance. Probably wouldn't take long as I think 50ºC (about 147 F) should do it. What you think? I didn't know that carnaúba was so widely used (worldwide). That's nice! would you mind sharing a picture? Also, she's here and is about 3 feet long. Do you think I might face too big of a challenge by disassembling it?
  11. Latticino, ThomasPowers Updates on the history of that Wilkinson's: According to the owner, the anvil came to Brazil, more precisely to Sorocaba, São Paulo, to be used during the construction of the "Sorocabana" railway. If that's true, then that might be a quite old anvil, as the construction of the Sorocabana railway started on June 13th 1872, and expansion took place up until 1957. The best source I found is from the Brazilian Wikipedia. It's in Portuguese, but if you're interested, Google should solve the problem. Cheers!
  12. Yeah, Rogério Cardoso, like Ronald Golias for example, also late, liked a lot to make faces and abuse their facial features. Both very funny. For me, I love to use those kind of pics as avatars, as it gets from people that exact reaction that you and Frosty: thinking it might be a personal photo. It's just my stupid sense of humor... hahah I often use this one too: I've already had people asking if that was my son and I just lol when that happens... No problem! An you're quite right, it's better to have an anvil and use than to have THE anvil and never use it. Thanks for the advices! Yeah, I agree. Had I had enough money at the moment I found it, I'd had bought it. But one good thing happened, the owner had already sold some other two Soderfors before that one, and as you guys helped me help her find out the other anvil was a Norrisez, she told me that as soon as she gets her hands on another one. Cheers! Indeed =)
  13. I seems like the way I shared so many anvils and asked a lot of question of type "should I buy it" made me look like someone who's trying to make profit on the anvil market. This is not the case. My goal is: to find a nice anvil for myself that has great quality (that's why I'm looking for English, Swedish and American anvils, instead of Brazilians) for when I get the space needed for a nice shop (hopefully on the near future). Both that, and the good opportunities that are showing up here in Brazil, led me to ask that many question on the quality and if the anvil is a good choice or not. Do not be worried, I'm not trying to make money on other people's knowledge, and even if that was the case, I'd not be wanting knowledge for free. Sorry if that seemed the case. I'll look into making myself clearer on the future. Nope, that's Rolando Lero, a character created by the late Brazilian comedia Rogério Cardoso. He was, in my humble opinion, one of the best comedians in Brazil, if not THE best. It's a shame that, even if there's some of his material subbed in English, the kind of jokes he made would probably not be very funny in English. And although Edson Fachin is not a comedian himself, our judiciary system is... That's life... Thanks! I'm not after you answering faster, as it may have seemed. I'm just worried that I'm still posting stuff that is not totally related to the topic original question. If that's not a problem on this forum, I won't be sending anyone PM's any soon. hahahah Cheers, all!
  14. Thanks for the inputs, guys! It will be here by tomorrow morning" I have some carnaúba wax here at home! How should I apply it? Would I need to heat the vice with a torch or should I just apply it cold? I'll go and get a wire brush too. Do you remove the rust before brushing it?
  15. Thanks, guys! Will wait for a better opportunity. Latticino and Thomas Powers, would you guys mind if I PM you when I find something interesting?
  16. Hey, guys. New pics and a video. The jaws seem to align correctly, but are clearly used. Still a good choice, right? Going over to get it tomorrow morning. Cheers! WhatsApp_Video_2020-05-14_at_16_27_15.mp4
  17. Thanks Latticino, I found another anvil, is this a Wilkinson's? The owner says it's a "Kinson's" anvil What you think about it. Is it worth $290? And sorry about asking so much if it's good or not.L
  18. Just a friendly reminder the use of the @tag is frowned upon. Using the @ name on the forum What you guys think about that Nash & Sons? Worth the price? She does have a cut on the horn:
  19. Yeah, well, I dont actually know. I do know that the jaws are 100mm wide and open 200mm away from each other. I'll try gather some more info.
  20. Well, if you mean the vise that I currently own, then this is it: It's a small. The jaw opens only 100mm wide. You see, I don't have an actual "shop" so I had to buy tools as I started needing them; and they could now be very big as space is a problem. Now I'll probably be able to use another part of the house I live in, so this is why I'm already after better/bigger tools.
  21. Hello dear smiths! I hope you're all doing fine during this trying times. I'm from São Paulo, Brasil and have been in love with blacksmithing for some good 3 years now. I started by following Torbjorn Ahman, then Christ Centered Ironworks, Black Bear Forge, and most of these sacred blacksmithing monsters that share their knowledge and art via Youtube and Instagram. I started to venture myself on the craft by going after "the adequate fuel for a forge" which led me to coke; believe it or not, I cannot find bituminous coal / antracite here, but I could actually find coke! After buying some 25KG, I ended up not able to light the xxxx thing. Little did I know how much more heat I'd have to generate before actually being able to use the fuel. And this is where my quest for a forge began. To make the story short, I made myself two forges, and only the second did actually work well enough so that I could forge something. You can check the creation process link removed (you can see the first one on a video by the end of the post), and it working here. Now I resell coke on the Brazilian equivalent of eBay and by last December I bought myself my first anvil: a shy 10KG piece of nodular iron that was what I could afford by the time (Am after something better now). I've been struggling to make my first pair of tongs a bit link removed, but every now and then, when I have enough time to get down to the forge, I always try to give all that I have. I also try to share as much as I can of the crafts that I get myself into on my Instagram page. I've already posted here and there on the forum, and I'm really happy with your reception. This community is really nice and I have to say that I got really emotional when I found the Prayers section. You guys rock! Muito obrigado!
  22. The seller already reserved the forge to me. I'm getting over his city by Saturday morning to get it. Will post news as soon as I'm back!
