  1. We have access to a trainwheel press so if its a press fit then I wont bother fighting it, ill just get it to the press.
  2. The best info you will ever get is DONT DO IT. Unless that anvil is set and you know exactly what your doing dont run this machine at all. There is no safety, it is only held up by the die height. Running it will cause it to crash the top of the ram into the guide plate and do serious damage. It is far more powerful then you think.
  3. So im into my 2b only to find scoring on the bigend journal. The oiler had broken off the crankarm and the hammer obviously was run that way. It is my assumption the crank has to come out and the flywheel pressed off so I can have it ground clean. We can do this (same shop doing the 4B work) but am I missing an easier solution? Its not horrid but certainly needs attention. I have the conrod off/out and can get good pics. The wristpin had 30 thou play so we are rebushing that as we go.
  4. I have to say Jesse's mount looks just awful and underbuilt. Is it? No idea but while we liked the general idea of it, I felt this installation was very under built. I think you have seen what we did as a solution but I can get better pics taken if you would like to see them.
  5. Its really very nice. The negatives are all due to the oil cup on the con rod coming loose. The bearing is wiped and the journal will have to be ground. The ram is in excellent shape and tight.
  6. I'll be picking your brain a bit on this Grant, its more relevant then you might think I'll start a thread on the 2b separately to help those with the same issues.
  7. Update on this hammer. The ram was removed and is indeed missing the cushion plug. The ram had been machined to accept the plug from beneath and even was drilled for locking screws. Currently there is a new plug that fits from beneath and the flats for the guides are being dressed and machined so that they are centered to the plug (they were only 2 thou out so no issue there). The top of the ram where the guide surfaces meet were poorly blended (but only about 15 thou removed) and we are recutting the radius. This was obviously interfering with the guide plates. The cushion tower was removed and checked. There was some galling at the location of the cushion bushing BECAUSE IT WAS NOT PRESENT. The last person in this hammer obviously made a cushion plug the same size as the opening and allowed a steel on steel fit. Galling removed, cushion bushing fitted and radiused. The surfaces were amazingly within 3 thou and in perfect condition. The ring on this part was actually worn thin and broken, we will have to replace it. I have not sourced it yet. The guide ring is another matter. It was repaired by brazing and is cracked all around. There are a few options to repair it but replacing is the most reasonable. The guide plates are exactly what I suspected once I knew the ram issues. They are like new, polished with wonderful oil grooving. They are however hardened steel rather then cast iron and have done some damage to the ram, thankfully this hammer hasnt run much since 'rebuilt' and damage was very small. It would have sucked if we didnt already have the ram out being serviced. I'm feeling confident on the work being done. The shop doing the cutting understands exactly whats going on. Good thing as my 2b is now coming apart....
  8. I'll try to measure mine tomorrow. You might have to remind me!
  9. Lefthanded/righthanded is no real issue. Just recut the dove in the sowblock the other direction.
  10. I do know that Postville bought some derelict 2B's last year. Maybe they have an anvil for sale.
  11. The sizes are very different. It would be easier to build it from a few large chunks then to cut one down. Mine is currently not installed and I can give you exact dimensions if you need. Hopefully it will be in the ground in a couple weeks. If you could find an anvil from a smaller hammer like a fairbanks or another hammer with a tall anvil with no foot it would be easier then converting a footed nazel anvil.
  12. looks like it will work with enough love, but I'd work on that price if you can. Shoot for half that price is more reasonable I think. Of course I would buy it anyway but I'm goofy that way. Its going to need some decent welding to get it back strong...
  13. So I have just bought another power hammer and have an overfull shop with no roof. I'm short about $1600 on my roofing and we are putting up the last of the beams today. This hammer needs a home! Hammer currently has the front moving bits dissasembled but just need cleaning and reassembly. The mainstaft is still stuck but honestly I really have not worked on it. There are just too many other things going on in my life right now. Here is a rare chance to own an early hammer. Quick sale or no sale! If I get the cash to complete the building elsewhere chances are I wont sell it till its rebuilt$$$$ 100 lb Dupont with dies located in Marriottsville MD 21104 Can load to your truck or trailer with enough notice.
  14. Please consider joining us for the 2011 Fire and Brimstone Hammer-In and Smelt on March 26th.-27th. 2011 in Historic Marriottsville, Maryland Jesus Hernandez will be running our tatara and Tony Swatton will once again be coming to show us how to make and use the tools we all want! . Additional demonstrations and lectures will be happening all weekend. We will have forging on our power hammers as well as metal casting. Event will be at our forge (Baltimore Knife and Sword Co.) and the Church/Studio next door (Fire and Brimstone Studio). We have just purchased a number of large wood turning lathes and spinning lathes and will be finding demonstrators who can give us some hands on lessons. Hopefully the Nazel 4B will be up and running. It is installed in place but need some love. The Beaudry is on foundation and should be rocking soon! John Larson will of course be bringing hammers for sale and demonstrating and anyone with tools or machines for sale or trade is encouraged and welcome. Additional confirmed demonstrators we will be working into the schedule include Jeff Pringle, Deker, Larry Nowicki, Chris Price, Kerry and Matt Stagmer. If you are a demonstrator or are planning to come and have something to share, please touch base as we would like to pack in as much information as possible for attendees. As always we will try to allow as much hands on with demonstrator oversight as possible. We will be limiting attendance to 60. Registration will be $75 for the entire weekend to offset our costs. Vendors and tailgating is encouraged at no additional fee and will have separate parking, trailers allowed. Please visit our site http://www.fireandbrimstone.com The site will include accommodations, Schedule, and Artists/Demonstrators. We are still rebuilding the site but it is live now and registration is open. I will be talking to the local hotel to see if we can get group rates. Breakfast and lunch are provided, grills are open for anything you wish to bring or share! Camping is encouraged but weather in Maryland is always suspect! The later dates should help us out quite a bit. The first year we had snow, 2nd year it was down right warm and sunny, 3rd well we had a little water.... There are bathrooms(spot-a-pots) but no showers. We will be updating the site often as we confirm additions to the event. This just in..... Doug Seward and his BBQ have confirmed..... The raisins are already soaking...
  15. $300? and you guys would pass on it? If it where in my region it would already be in my shop. I do of course do a fair amount of cold work, this would dish and form quite well.
  16. Rick from the Streetcar Museum in Baltimore located a NOS set sitting on a shelf at an old motor repair shop in the area. He dropped them off yesterday but it will be next week before I can remove the motor end and oil it up so it disengages correctly. $40 seems a reasonable amount to pay for fixing this problem.
  17. I cant imagine why you would bother to steal one! Seems a pretty dam simple part to pull the ram out of a hammer and remove it. At least the compressor side seems to be working fine. The oiler is great and we are running it on a DC low speed motor I already had. Motor started right up with no issues or bearing noise. The drawings were more a parts list and location from an old manual, but yes very nice of him to offer them. Mark Krause's repairing pics on facebook are also great help. That way you can see exactly what NOT to do as well. He is repairing some pretty awful stuff and making it work again.
  18. Would seem kinda hard to loose a cushion plug as I would think you have to pull the entire front end of the hammer apart! I imagine they must have scavenged it for parts. The dies fell off in transit, wow. The guy they got it from has 9 nazel, I would assume he knows how to set the dies just fine...
  19. I was looking at some repair photos from Mark Krause today and noticed something. The place where the cushion plug goes is simply empty. Seems pretty obvious the seller isnt telling everything they know. I talked to the person who sold it to Yoder Machine and they said it was sold with dies and running right out of their shop. (actually was traded in on a 6b) It should be interesting to see what else is up as we get into it.
  20. Exactly. But when first it arrive and we ran it a bit staked into the ground everything was fine, I simply forgot thats how it ran. Now its all pretty sitting up on a raised foundation (the floor is getting infill).
  21. This is a slip belt. We are sitting on 2 ft+ of concrete which is sitting on a foot of 5/7 crusher. I would assume it quite a bit undersized but certainly better then the 6" beams it was spiked to in the dirt.
  22. Now I do feel stupid! I was searching around for brushes for this motor when I ran across this video. This is exactly how this motor was working when I got it. I had completely forgotten. So for the last several times we have run it the brushes were stuck locked on and ground themselves away. Completely my fault for not checking the lockout. I'll bet they would have last me years. At least its a fixable mistake.
  23. I was only able to do a little drawing on one billet and the anvil has not moved. I assumed it would take more then that. Looks like the brushs can be found/made without to much issue. Nice as I wanted to save that old motor if possible, looks great on the machine. Its a 5 hp 1725 so if I have to change it, it would be no problem. It certainly came to life as the oils got into all the require places. It was quite noticable as it happened.
  24. Sorry Bill life is getting in the way at the moment. Bruce Wallace did send me factory drawings and parts lists so I have a better idea what I'm looking at. Unsloicited. Nice of him. Matt Harris has gone into his hammer quite a bit as has Dave Hammer, both are local to me. I may have to bribe them with food to come over at some point. It will be a week or more before we get into it. End of selling season here and I'm trying to squeese a few more $$$ out of the year.
