I only limped for a day or so but it hurt for several and the bruise took about 2 weeks to fade.

First Timer from Texas
Welcome aboard There are lots of experienced people here that are more than happy to help. Myself I am like you in the "don't know what I don't know" category. I do have a welding background and some nice toys in the shop though. I end up working in Austin quite often but fortunately I do not live in the city. I live in Liberty Hill just north west of ATX. The standard suggestion is to post your location with your avatar so that in future posts you may be able to hook up with someone local and to read the READ THIS FIRST section.

South german anvil ID
Upon closer inspection there is a crack that runs the full height of the wing on one side. The crack does not run under the wing where it attaches to the main body. At some point someone put some type of filler in the crack possibly to disguise the damage ?

Here are a couple pictures of the anvil that I may or may not repair. It is an S and H made in 1911 Every thing on it is in good shape except for the side wing. Below on the upset block it is marked with the weight 210 KG and the marking N 25 I believe that might be the style? Under the makers mark I think the N 25 is there again just worn. Here are pictures of the damage. I had originally thought that the only damage was the portion of the hard plate at the edge of the wing was gone.

Coronavirus 2020
Myself I wanted to be prepared for the Poodemic So I bought 300 cases of certified organic , non GMO , vegan friendly , CBD oil and lavender oil infused Toilet paper. As you wipe you not only smell better but the CBD makes your rear feel better. So if anyone runs out of TP you can PM me I am selling my special TP for 7.99 per roll plus shipping and handling . Amazon prime can probably get it to you by drone before you run out. The fear mongering and misinformation is out of hand. My wife went normal grocery shopping today. She went to 3 stores all of them were out of MANY items. None of them had bacon! No bread ,butter ,milk. In our area no confirmed cases. Just craziness

I have not so much as wire brushed any part of my larger anvil. It feels like the horn is needle sharp. Last week is was walking past the anvil before I got to it someone distracted me. I spoke to them for a couple minutes turned around and rammed my thigh into the horn. I have a bruise the size of a softball with a small round dot in the middle. The horn comes to a point slightly smaller that my pinky finger. The anvil that might need repair or possibly surgery has had the side wing abused. The hard plate is damaged at the front of the wing and where the wing was forge welded to the body of the anvil is cracked on one side. The rest of the anvil is in good shape. So there are 3 options Leave it alone Fix it or remove the side shelf

Chris I have a small but active steel fab business. At the end of each year I look at the books. If we have had a good year I can either pay more taxes or I can purchase equipment. So I am in the fortunate position that the business can buy me toys (tools) and I can write them off. I purchased both anvils and a large double leg post vice . The anvils were a little less than 3$ per pound and the vices was about 505 plus freight . it’s biggg. The S and H anvil I bought as a project the side wing has some damage. My plan is to repair it with the Gunther - Shuler method and resell it to recoup some of the costs. Everyone here is very negative about anvil repair and I understand that most people that are on the site or view the site are not capable of doing the repair correctly . Having been a certified welder since 1985 I am going to give it a go. As for your anvil the things I have seen that you have posted have been knives. They have been very nice your attention to detail and woodworking skill are excellent. When you start forging your own blades I am sure that you will have enough anvil. Keep making beautiful things with what you have plenty of. Talent and a desire to create good things.

I have a beautiful 559# south German anvil with a side wing and an upset block it also is s unmarked except for the kilo weight stamp I was told that many of the anvils produced in Germany during both world wars were unmarked except for weight. I don’t know if that is true or not but it does make sense. The company’s were pressed into service so why take the extra time or provide something with their brand. i also have a 442# S and H or Soding und Halbach anvil. The shape and details look almost identical to its larger brother but it has their logo the weight in kilos and the date of manufacture all stamped into it. The smaller one was made in 1910 both have excellent rebound you will enjoy your new anvil even if you can’t find out exactly who made it . There were quite a few good anvil makers in Germany and from what I have seen each had a slightly different style so you might be able to make an accurate guess by comparing yours with ones that look the same and are branded

I could not view the video so I may have to wait. As for the hardy tooling that is how I had planned on making them also. On my last steel order I got a stick of 1-1/2 square solid that fits my hardy hole. 20 feet should make more hardies than I need.

What did you do in the shop today?
If it makes you feel any better . Mine is not done yet either. being a welder I fabbed up the shell and the stand quickly . Then i put in the Kaowool and rigidized it not my thing but not to bad. I am hung up on the refractory cement. I hate concrete It is wet and yucky . I am a perfectionist and I know that i will do a crappy job on the hard liner. So I let other things side track me and it sits waiting for attention.

Daswulf My wife is both tough and crazy. We had our three at home and she didn't want any drugs. 17 year old son 15 year old daughter and 11 year old son . My kids are one of my best projects Fortunately it seems like i am getting it right so far. We have a happy family and good kids which all have a good work ethic. My eldest son graduated high school early and has become a very good welder. Hopefully you can instill some of your creativity and drive in you girls. Enjoy this project and do the best you can!

When the shop is done I see the first video-------- video series ! JLP Services Presents "Anvil Tooling" What to make. Why you need it. How to make it. As for the filming---MInd Blown 6 cameras I take pictures of things when they are done when I remember. I can't even comprehend the amount of time and patience to set up and then edit feed from 6 cameras. Thank You Very Much for taking the time , money, and patience to teach the audience that you reach. The same audience who may take it for granted with no thought to gratitude let alone compensation for your efforts! You may have just come out of retirement but you still know how to ride that bike. And your desire to share with others the knowledge that you have earned/learned is laudable. Thanks for your efforts

How to Forge Rectangular Blacksmiths Diamond
Over the years 4 of the people I have trained and became on of my foreman have started their own businesses None in direct competition 2 of them have later subcontracted work from me I have been told that I used to be very hard to work for, but that i have changed somewhat. One of the people I trained 25 years ago worked for several other companies and came back to me 5 years ago. He is now my right hand man we worked out a sweat equity buy in deal so that he is fully invested Many people have received training at my shop and have used that as a spring board into what they thought would be a better job. Often times asking for their job back later.

How to Forge Rectangular Blacksmiths Diamond
Sadly No I lost a foreman and 1 good hand and 1 helper all in a 3 day period 2 weeks ago So I have been working my butt off trying to stay on top off the things The joys of a small business The fore man had been taking night classes in electrical engineering for 2 years and gave me notice . The good hand had received all of his " apprentice training " at my shop and quit with 2 day notice for a Union job Here in Texas the unions are desperate for hands and you can "buy" in pay all the dues for the apprentices ship program and you can go in as a journey man

Found "my" Tombstone Welder !
I have been a certified welder since 1985. Many times in my life being a welder has been very boring. BUT the things that welding allows you to fabricate are only limited by your imagination. Look at Daswolfs creations some of them are mind blowing. He is making art with steel using welding and forging. Me I am more autistic than artistic yet I have been able to make some very cool things. You will really enjoy learning and adding this new skill to your arsenal of skills. I have seen your expert wood working skills manifest in the knives you have shown to us. Me I am looking forward to learning some forging skills to add to my metal working skills. Make cool things and have fun with your new toy

Found "my" Tombstone Welder !
Chris sounds like you probably using a 70 series rod 7018 maybe? I weld with a # 10 for most things , I also wear prescription glasses under my hood. Something you might want to try is Cheater lenses. They are basically like reading glasses but they fit in your welding hood. they are available in in several different strengths . As far as your rod sticking you might be a little cold (not enough amperage) or it might be easier for you to start and practice some with a 60 series rod 6010 or 6013 maybe. They say that getting the arc started is like striking a match (The wooden matches in the cardboard box) you drag the rod against the steel until it lights so to speak. You will get the hang of it solve the seeing issue first though David You can buy cheaters at most welding supply shops if you don't or can't see with glasses on under your hood

JLP Services Inc (Jennifer) about me thread..
I may as well continue the highjack of Jennifers about me thread. ( I read and enjoyed the journey. Thanks Jennifer) I never did anything more than street racing when I was younger although I did have some fairly quick cars. Unfortunately my mentor at the time was die hard Ford guy. Horsepower cost more in a ford. At one point I had street legal mid 10s 66 ford ranchero running FE power. I built quite a few older muscle car motors and trans but life and family and reality sidelined that for a while. Fast forward to the present and have been molded into a Ford Guy while young. I am still mostly a ford guy. I decided to fully rebuild the motor of our family car an 04 Excursion "The King of SUVs" 6.0 liters are much different to rebuild than muscle car gassers. When I started tearing it down I had an OH xxxx moment with how complex the newer motors are. So I dug in and really enjoyed the rebuild. When rebuilding I went for a balance between performance and reliability. I can tell you for certain our big black brick is fast now! Smokes them in 1st chirps them in 2nd and 3rd when I have stupid foot! My next motor rebuild is a 1969 428 Cobra Jet motor for my 1969 Ford F250 crew cab 4x4. I am planning on going with port injection on it to make it more steetable. CtG I may want to pick your brain about the 7.3 My daughter and I recently bought a 97 crew cab short bed 4x4 with a 7.3 and want to do a little bit of this and that to it. Jennifer The story isn't over! Keep going!

What did you do in the shop today?
jwilson I am glad to have read that. Being a man or woman of your word is something that is becoming much less common. As a small business owner doing custom steel fabrication ,I have had my fair share of painful jobs. I do all of my own quotes and estimating a job based upon you doing the work is hard enough at times. Now mix in employees . Estimating jobs based upon employees can be scary. As you bid more jobs you will get a hang for it, especially if you are a one person show. For years the size of jobs that I did slowly got larger until I got to a point where most of the jobs were of a certain size. Then one of my best clients wanted me to do a job that was 2-1/2 times larger than I had ever done . I spent a loooooooooong time going thru that estimate before I turned in my proposal . It was nerve wracking at times but that job made me good money. The point i am getting at is Stand by your word It is all you can build your reputation on. When you make mistakes {and you will} don't let them beat you or scare you. As you progress you will learn how to price your work and what the market will bear. I now tackle some ridiculous , weird , stupid jobs and am not scared of the job or charging accordingly. This weekend I will be shutting down a main street in downtown Austin Tx to shove 650# beams In a window on the 3rd floor of a building built in 1910. Once in the window we have to roll them 165 feet thru the building to eventually lower them down to the floor below. I WILL make very good money on that job! Take your licks learn from them and continue to make great things!
