  1. got it some what close then nearly finished the handle mostly because i was scared of making it worse... just got done with another session and im pretty much in the same spot, cant get everything nicely centered. think im gonna started blueing the side im not grinding
  2. i use one of those anvils as well. been abusing the xxxx out of it. xxxx just made a 2 pound hammer striking with a 4 pounder most of the time. if i end up xxxxxxx it up that bad xxxx it was 130 bucks. although i need to make a striking anvil.. i have a little piece of 1" plate might work i guess..... putting a hardy hole in it gonna be a [challenge].
  3. an old high carbon file, like the size down from 14 inch bastard. hardened in oil i dont know what the handles are but my buddy said its from some kinda tractor hitch thing i forgot how he explained it but they use a hard wood so if its over stressed it will break and not bend or something? got it in square piece and actually carved it round with a chisel lol i think the little decay that was forming gave it a cool look
  4. diggin those tongs! found out i had a pretty decent size piece of wrought in the mystery steel bucket today as i was trying to work an abrupt bend from it. got a nice length flattened and an old heller file de-toothed for a lamination session tomorrow morning (if all goes well) other then the initial break i haven't had any trouble with it. just nervous about how the wroughts gonna behave with the high carbon. only one way to find out
  5. frosty, to be honest ive never been to a junkyard, i assume there are ones that only really have old cars like pull a part type places then you have your general steel scrappers.... i did notice a ma and pa kinda dingey lookin auto place only a couple blocks from me who had a few visible drums with various scrap, might go check n see if they have any spring steel at scrap price. tried my hand at my first hammer today, starting weight was 2.2 pounds, im gonna try to fix the wonkiness the eye has today.... that should be fun
  6. yo frosty, you know of any good scrap yards in portland area?
  7. certainly not the prettiest but its mine and i spent all of $0.00 on it. 2hp tread mill motor with a cheapo scr set up. the person i did the tomahawk for has it hung up now still havnt utilized this hammer eye drift although i have high hopes
  8. oh man i was a bit off my rocker when i posted that, managed to get a well deserved notice. and not in the side glare wink, followed by a frothy one one flung right into my gnurrled flesh crains ... slurring his words about ancient artifacts used by The Son of God himself.... i deserved one just for typos alone
  9. your railroad design looks surprisingly close to one i start a while back

  10. thomas thats nice to know. any idea how that heat treated back then? i made a xxxxx xxxxx hammer eye drift i mean to use soon and ill need to chench the sob sob. (hammer not drift, drift came out harder then kenshiro's finger tips) fist of the north star? eh? anyone? anyway i kinda want to go for a harden whats crucial and maybe a bit more. the steel was a bust knuckle pin sparked 1055-1016, ive heard they would hardened them near the tope where the head was for some safety reasons i forget,. i however got a beautiful 2 1/2 piece of stock, also friend gave me another one the other day still intact. different model little thinner but sparks the same
  11. howdy from WA, very cool to find you on here.  i watched your video titled making 100 round hamers as soon as it aired give or take,  (this was before i had discovered you channel) THAT POWERE HAMMER THO! and i loved the segment  where you gave us a little insight into your journy as a young black smith, the trip to the UK, and so on.

ill admit im not like a alec steel super fan, i only recently discovered who he was. i good do with 25 segment videos. BUT i like his and sam and was happy to see them expanding and laying a foundation for an actual what should be succussfull business, i think he's put the work in and id rather see people spending their money on something made from someone whos done the work. but when i saw the vid of the unboxing i was like what....domestic outsourcing? whats keeping then from maybe not spending 5 months on a fuckings sword breaker with a diomand encrusted edge and just fire up the power hammer. then i thought more about it speculated that maybe alot of him being where he is now was likely alot to do with the work he put into youtube and his fan support. so if thats true that would make each upload a valuable part of business.. but 16 parts g'dang... joking. then i watched your video and it all makes sense and now i want a hammer!   not to mentionn the hammer eye tongs! one day

im so embarressed by this post

  12. that is xxxxxxx amazing jhcc. this thread has been inspiring me to do some ornamental things. unrelated but do any of you guys have experience with making forge welded sockets? i have an order for a chisel and im rather intimidated. i was thinking for stock id use a rr spike with a leaf spring bit but after peaning out the socket end quite a bit i dont feel like i have enough area to work a socket let alone forge weld it. im still struggling with drawing material width ways in general
  13. san mai ive been working on, have to re-polish/vinegarize as i quenched it again do to an annoying line i got do to missing part of the edge in the first dunk seen in the third photo the brass isnt glued to anything yet just fitted a shoulder so i can still work out the little gaps
  14. i feel that HojPoj dan thanks for the advice hoj, ive always wondered how they did that. im gonna get me some of dat
  15. awesome man the hardness is perfect. i can bite into it with a file if i REALLY try... and obviously its stood the test of time with no substantial damage. im gonna clean it up a tiny bit more nd paint it black. any suggestions on coating?
  16. http://www.yesteryearstools.com/Yesteryears Tools/Plumb Co..html from the info i gathered here i decided they started using that logo after he bought out yerks in 1887. i could be wrong. check it out i more then likely missed something
  17. found this lil 5 pound striker. do you guys see these often? its cast steel and seems like the heat treat is still runnin strong
  18. thanks pnut, very reassuring making a mini carving axe with some one of those sickle sections as the bit. also the ulu knife is coming along.. idk is they're simple carbon steel but they're hard as wood pecker lips even without quenching also handled a 5 pound sledge and restored/handle an old chisel....and made lots of borax scales
  19. pnut pretty sure they're pretty dang old. i also got a box of some ancient looking sickle sections, a shoeing hammer head, one ancient horseshoe and a few hundred domed rivets with a rivet header. ive read some threads on hear regarding sickle sections it didnt get me any closer to knowing what they're made from but i know they spark high carbon. also got three unopened five packs of the straight bladed one. i forged welded 2 of em together to make an ulu. infact im gonna go do some hardening tests on them i have so many if they prove decent for blades might weld up some billets as i have a bunch of them. also got my hands on some heavy but not to heavy leaf spring from a trailer.... granted this stuff is mostly for personal progression and gifts and the occasional discounted sale. not claiming to anyone that "this is a 5160 camp axe" more like....check out this little axe i made from scrap leaf spring... 20 bucks? sure why not
  20. first try at a laminated blade, file sandwitched between your average lawnmower blade. scored a bunch of them from a buddy, in hindsight i woulda used something else. a bit too thin for only 3 layers me thinks... anyway i hardened well altho there is one small section on the spine that has delaminated a pretty noticable amount while i think is still functional for personal use im highly tempted to scrap it but ill most likely slap a quick handle on it and run it thru some strength tests as ive been wanted to do that. that way i stand to gain some actuall insight on my work any feedback is welcomed.
  21. that is so sick ted, the black horned griffin who can be seen diving into the firey depths to stoke the flame so as the age of fire may live on.... think ive been playing to much dark souls
  22. just finished these up. second hawk, 6th knife i believe. the tomahawk is leaf spring and the bowie was an old heller file
  23. hoj, it has like a 3/16' shoulder on it and the pieces that fits inside is pretty snug im not to worried about it
