  1. Charles,I'm gonna try that. The noise doesn't bother me but if I can make it quieter I will. Thanks I couldn't tell in the pictures. I thought it was just a ball valve connected to a short pipe nipple connected to the tuyere.
  2. Ausfire, cool bird. Kinda looks like a ferrousdactyl Jhcc, what size is the mixing tube and whatdid you use for the holes? I should be more specific. What did you use for the holes in the castable?
  3. My tires were frozen to the ground the other morning. Not solidly just enough that I had to give the acceleratora good push to get loose.
  4. Glad to hear it went well.now get your anvil on it and your off to the races Once again jlpservices to the rescue.
  5. Goodidea Maxwell that sounds like it would work. Simple is always better
  6. Is there anything near it you can anchor a towstrap and ratchet style come-along to? . Or if you have a snatch block you can gain even more mechanical advantag in combination with the come along. The snatch block would require cable or round webbing. I don't think you can thread a flat tow strap through it.
  7. Hook it up and pull it out with a vehicle if it's in a spot where that's possible. If not jlpservices has the right idea.
  8. Try fire. Build a fire and then shovel the coals around the log to thaw the ground around it.
  9. I know this is an older post, but if you are still having problems try an electric air mattress pump with a ball valve between the pump and the tuyere. you can control the air flow by adjusting the ball valve.
  10. Is the pien end pointed or wedge shaped. Can't tell in the picture
  11. Glenn, with time most of my systems tend towards fuzzy ; )
  12. Thanks people have called me that since I was about 12. I don't mind the cold too much it just makes all my old injuries ache a little more. People around here don't drive too well in the snow and the streets aren't taken ccare of like they should. I hope it drove some people into the hotel I work at. It's been slow. When I worked outside the snow did make it just that much more difficult. It'll probably be back in the fifties by the weekend hopefully . Sooner it warms up the sooner I can heat up some metal.
  13. Thomas, sign me up I love the southwest. I used to live in the high desert outside the Lancaster Palmdale area. I woke up it's 2 degrees now with 25-30 mph gusts. Oh yeah almost forgot snowed again too. It was 50 and raining the other day.the Ohio valley anymore seems like there's only two seasons. 90 degrees with 95% humidity or cold and wet. That's enough boo hooing though it could turn into a permanent condition
  14. I appreciate it I'm sure I'll have lots of questions moving forward. What I really need is anvil time. its only 14 outside with a -10 wind chill so I've been cooped up since I have to work outside.
  15. I was having trouble with my phone. Couldn't keep the keyboard on. The bar looked a bit short to make upsetting easy. I finally feel like I'm figuring out the why of some basic techniques but I still need to work on the how. Thanks for the info and once again great video. I find them easier to understand than most others.
  16. Another great video. One question. During the heats that you cooled the end and continued to upset the stock was that done to gain more mass the eye
  17. Olydemon, yep that sounds like what I was thinking. After I looked at it for a second it seemed pretty self explanatory. I Started typing before I started thinking. oops. I do think they have personality in spades though. Im gonna give it a try soon. Have you tried rubbing anything dark into them then wiping off the high spots like you do with engraving.? I'm off to work. Have a productive day folks.
  18. Glenn, I agree it looks like every bark spud I've ever used .
  19. Olydemon, I've never seen anyone actually make a skull. How do you get the bulge at the top? Upset it or draw down the jaw? They look great they each have their own personality. Good job. After a closer look probably a bit of both
  20. Copper is weird metal . Use definitely will polish it. I don't have much experience with it. I made an evaporator /condenser when I was a teenager. I tried making my own "beverages" for a while. I'd like to try some more sheet metal work though. I played with an English wheel and a power planisher at my friends bike shop but its not something I just took to. I need some practice but I did make a passable fender. With a lot of help from him.
  21. I was referring to the planishing done during manufacturing the kettle I watched a documentary yesterday about a shop in Ohio that's been making copper kettles for over 100 years. It was on pbs. I think they're located near Columbus. Bucyrus kettle works is the name of the place. I think Bucyrus is a town outside of Columbus but not 100 percent sure. I also worked at a candy company long ago but it was a factory not a shop. I made air heads for van melle. Anyhow mudman beautiful spoons and jlpservices I truly enjoy your videos you lay things out in an easy to understand way that can penetrate my thick skull. Most how to type videos are a pain to watch but I enjoy yours
  22. The more it's worked the shinier it will become also. Have you ever seen a cold worked candy or apple butter kettle?
  23. Cincinnatus, not trying to hijack the thread but your are the closest smith I've found so far and I just wanted to say hello. I'm located near Florence KY. Dry ridge actually but you may not be familiar with that town. I don't know anyone else involved with blacksmithing and as a beginner would appreciate any help or advice you would care to offer. Let me know if you ever get across the river into KY. Perhaps we could meet up and talk metal. Pm me anytime and sorry for being off topic.
