  1. Haha. Reason I run heavy equipment farm and was a soldier. Darn spell check failed me yet again. Thanks for the help. Its been good for me to get into this hobbies. I have whole list of tools. I need. Garbear the grizzly
  2. The file is high carbon. Not cheap case harden. I haven't made a tomahawk either but focusing in on tools mostly figure one gets me tools two practice practice. Thanks Garbear the grizzly
  3. Thanks. I was thinking it might be. But figure using for tools I'll be okay. Like if I miss on a hot cut won't hurt my hammer. I have an old long file that I can attempt to forge weld in for a bit. Not going to be for throwing mostly strap to my ruck sack for Minot chopping choirs but want a round eye so if necessary can fit a handle to it. Garbear the grizzly bear.
  4. I keep telling my self don't succumb to this hobbies. To late. Ok here's my questions. I have a tie rod off my 94 3/4 ton Ford. Now before the Chevy guys start in here me out. I had to replacethrong tie rod. I tossed it in the steel pile, but everytime I look at it the wheels start turning. Ok mostly I'm wanting to make drifts punches and cut off tools. I think be good for that. Other question. There a nice round hole and I was thinking tomahawk run a drift through it and forge. Does it need high carbon bit or is this a hard steel that I can quench the edge? Thank. Garbear
  5. Ok. Found Mark on the side of anvil. The bottom is gone. Looks like angle steel welded to it and whole thing bolted to the stand. Ok. Couldn't get a clear picture. But is a diamond. Its a Trenton. I couldn't make out what the weight was. I lightly sanded with wd40 and steel wool but didn't wAnt alter it since it is my brothers.
  6. The steel isn't sparking coming out of the forge. I'll try get pictures tonight at dusk. I he st section of spring unwind section n hot cut. I heat and straighten and start squaring. One heat for bending one end another heat to bend second end. Can scale cause cracking? Got thinking might be issue but not a lot of scale when it comes out. The color is a bright orange almost a yellow color. I'm using small propane forge. I stop hammering when Cole does to deep dark red. Mostly whether steel will work fir striker or not also for practice Thanks Garber
  7. I'm attempting to make a flint striker. I'm using coil spring from garage door. My issue with the second n third is cracking in the steel while I'm forging. It isn't happening at the quench stage. I set them aside didn't go that far once I seen the cracks. Mostly I'm thinking I need to normalize but couldn't find answer searching. Thanks for the help. Oh I'm sure it's plenty hot because it's orange nearly yellow when it gets to my anvil. The shape simple d shape. I'm squaring the round after straightening. Hope I gave enough info. Garbear
  8. Finally regulator arrived. 0-40psi. Works great. Just playing with it for now. Next kaelwool for forge body interior. Next months order. 0621161923.mp4 0621162028.mp4
  9. Tried to edit and can't find the answer. Ok here is my question. Do I want the needle valve in conjunction with my regulator. I ordered a 0-60 off Amazon.
  10. I am building a second forge. With kaelwool. Regulator on the way. Have been reading like crazy. This is the forge body he is using. The diameters is 8 inches. Lenght 19 inches. Body stainless steel. The other forge I built ages ago. The burner wad from a thread on micro burner here and links from other members.
  11. I will. I had the tank cracked open and my emergency ball valve barely open. The body is just over 19 inches long diameter 8 inches across. My brother dead set on using. This is a fire extinguisher He cut the top and bottom off. He kept the top and bottom. Illvbe lining it with kaelwool. My best calculation is 245ish cubic inches. Be cause of the length doing two half inch t burners.
  12. 1/2 t burner. We're waiting on a pressure regulator. I was able to get it to heat a 5/8 rebar. The forge is a coffee can forge and insulation is homemade mix of plaster of Paris and sand. I'm currently working on a bigger forge that will be insulated with kaelwool. I'm building this for my younger brother who is a disabled war vet. 0528162304.mp4
  13. I don't know. We live in Utah. My grandpa lived across the road from the black smiths shop. He spent hours as a boy watching the man work. He often spoke of it. My love of tools and fixing things I learned from him.
  14. This anvil was my grandpa's. He gave it to my younger brother. No idea who made it all I know is grandpa had it long before we were born. He did tell us a friend gave it to him.
  15. No idea where it was made. This was given to my brother from our grandpa.
  16. I have run it using a blow dry. The pipe has stayed cool. I was planning on bruning the zinc of sometime this week. I have a brush pile to burn. Today I welded a plate on the side and bolted on a old stove blower. I have a 4" dryer metal dry vent just need to clamp that on. The base is very stable. last thing i need is a way to control the air and weld on a screen. Last screen I burned up. Thanks for the help. I'll post some pics after it is completed. I was excited and proud of my work Garbear
  17. Not finished I have my blower just scrounging around for a valve to control my air flow. Once I have that I'll finish putting together. Garbear
  18. I should have clarified. The wood is a commercial bought scale that has been stabilized.
  19. How can I finish stabilized wood. I have stabilized walnut and have put the knife together and need to finish for the handle. Can I use tung oil? Have to finish up before Christmas.
  20. no the cable isn't galvinized. I am still learning since I am a beginer
  21. Thanks Mike, I know or a fact the cable has no hemp core anything like that I cut it off because it was frayed back that far when I was operating the truck. The safty guy said they were just going to through away the cable so I asked to keep it planning to use it for a to cable to get my truck un stuck. As far as worth it I figure anytime I use a skill it just makes me better since I am a biginner. I would probly make one maybe 2 with it the rest would be for what I intended knives and hawks.
  22. I have another question. I have 30' of cable off my line truck/crane truck when I was working in the oil field. My understanding is the cable is high carbon steel. I am planning on trying to build som knives and tomahawks from it but got thinking I might work as a flint striker. Any help please? also the cable is covered in crude and dirt wil that make a difference? how can I clean it up so I can use it?
  23. I have used old denim for char cloth and it works great. I made some fire kits but ordered the strikers before. I was wondering if anyone has used any other steel other files and garage springs. I have old rail road spikes disks from farm equipment can I use those to make strikers. also I have seen strikes that are knives was wondering if anyone can direct me to a tutorial on how to make a striker knife.
  24. I hope i can post this here. My brother brought up a question to me about the light intensity in his brake drom forge. He said that the light of the crucibal in the brake drum forge was bright the most briliiant white light he has seen. He and I are wondering if we should use tinted safty glasses. We have safety glasses that are clear. He said to that usually he keeps it coverd with coal but sometimes it isn't. Any info please. I did tell him that our Grandfather(steel worker) had safety glasses that were tinted when he worked with the charging car and had to look into the open harth. My grandmother told me this becaue the frurnace was so bright. I am also wondering if I wear FRC coveralls(fire resistent clothing) if they would be good to use while forging.
