Hi, Thanks, it's for a divorced friend, that has to cook his own meals now. These files are pretty good material to forge, as it is good steel and the right size to completely hand forge on the anvil.

Hi Well, I can get a better flat grind after coming off the 2x72 Grinder... With even the small Disk Grinder I have now. A real 1.5 or 2 HP FWD/REV, VFD REAL Disk Grinder, has to be the Bee's Knees!

Hi, I bought a set of the Japanese Hardness Test File Sets, and... Was impressed in how well they gave me a better idea on what was going on... After Quenching and Tempering. Allowed me to vary and or experiment with Quenching and then Tempering for a certain steel. Admittedly, I only use simple Carbon Steels.

Hi, To the OP, if you get the Mr Volcano Forge, you want to set it up with a "Door" front and back to preserve heat and gas consumption. Hard fire bricks are easy to use and durable. I just built myself a small forge and use this idea and it works great. If you go with a jet orifice the Mr. Volcano Burners for $25 is a no brainer and work fantastic and are adjustable to get the atmosphere you want in the Forge. Here is a pic of my small but big enough for me Forge, I can run it and do with both types of burners.

Hi, Great job there... Good of you to keep the old machinery going. This is my 1945 3 PH Wellsaw. Looks rough, did not paint it, cause I needed it, however... Did completely rebuild the Gear Box, including replacing a broke Gear. Wellsaw, STILL completely supports this Saw with any parts you need!

Hi, Well, it has a front and back "door" made of upright hard firebrick. This allows longer iron to be positioned where you please. The length of the forge and diameter is small enough to do the job but save Gas. No need to me to heat up a foot of steel and only have time to work 5inches of it before the forging heat is gone. We used those vertical Fogg Forges to make swords and they only heated about 6 inches of steel at a time. It will forge weld and why I may not make pattern welded steel, because of not having a power hammer or press. Do enjoy the San Mai process and can do that on the Anvil. Just a neat little Forge and thought others might like to hear about it. I think most Forges are made to big actually. '

Hi, Well, thanks for the warning, even though, I do not use rigidizer. The added K-Wool and the PID does make a better product and easy to use.

Hi, Good question, I like both burners... (started with a Coal Forge...) I used to go to John C. Campbell's Art School, to take week or more classes in Blacksmithing and Knifemaking. A Buddy and I went to the Don Fogg Japanese Sword Class for one week. We both made a Fogg Vertical Blown Forge for the Class. It was a great Forge and would and did easily forge weld. I gave it to a friend that only ground knives to use for heat treating. Sooo....Brought up on Blown Forges, but the advantage to me with the aspirated burner is you can tune the heat lower while maintaining a neutral atmosphere. Seems that way to me and what I put together anyway. Hi, Before I retired, found a piece of steel pipe at work and decided to make a small knife making, and or small tool making forge. Aim was to conserve fuel, but yet have a full working forge. I use firebrick for doors and put in 2 1" layer K-Wool and a coating of Satinite. Forge pipe is split and can be separated for Wool install. Made a Blown Burner and also use a Mr. Volcano Burner. Turned out pretty good for what I need and happy with the outcome!

Hi, Thanks, I made and sold knives, 20 years ago, mostly Hunters and Fighters... Even made Pattern Welded and San Mai types... ( when I had a Power Hammer!) I just like a Mark and that works for me, not really looking to make money but just to support the habit. Would like a real VFD Horz. Grinder, and a few other things, we will see?

The problem now is I do not have a power hammer, or young anymore, so might have to buy steel closer to size to what I want to make. Hi, Two more knives, still trying to figure out the Handle shaping as I go. These blades are forged from 1939 Studebaker Leaf Spring. Thermo Cycled 3 times and quenched in warm ATF Fluid and then in the HT Oven at 400 Degrees for 2 hrs. x 2. The Logo Stamp, from the Ukraine is working well and I like it.

Hi, Good info! I'm trying to be frugal on gas but if I was trying to forge weld, would need to go to a ball valve. The problem with the Mr. Volcano Ball Valve is that the end that takes the hose is a barb and solid so can not be removed. A Needle Valve is what I had, so used it!

Hi, The "goose neck" or bend on the newer burners are threaded 1/8"NPT, that means... You can get fittings to up the plumbing to your own needle valve. I went up to 1/4" NPT and then used a 1/4" NPT to gas flare fitting to connect the tank. You can get the fittings at Lowes or ACE Hardware and the valves at Amazon... Any needle valve should work.
